Do hosting companies shut down your site because of spam?

I'm not talking about actual spam as in email spam.

I just read about people spamming newsgroups and the newsgroup users would get pissed and report the site until the hosting company shut it down.

So I was wondering if spamming across forums or chat rooms would result in a hosting company shutting down your site.

And is spamming chat actually considered spam?

Spamming is considered an illegal action. If I have web hosting clients spamming I will shut down their website. Luckily, I haven't ran into that problem yet though. I wouldn't do it over just one complaint though, thats for sure.

Depending on the level of spam, hosts would consider suspending the client.

We would generally notify the client of complaints and try and resolve it before taking it any further.

If the spam was serious, we would suspend the site immediately while reviewing the content and allegations.

Most of the time you will get a warning first and will be asked to stop, if it happens again I have seen some shut down their hosting but others i have heard put a hold on all your accounts but keep your website up and make you call them or other contact information and more then likely they will get to the bottom of it if it is you spamming.

but isn't email spam the only illegal spam?

and as for chat and newsgroup spam, would that get a site shut down?

We should know which is the hosting company you have in mind. Because every company has it's own policy. My advice is to read the TOS, and if you don't want to get warned or even suspended, stick to it.

newsgroup is a vluable resource and some hosts take user complaints seriously but depends on how many complaint they get. i know someone who's only marketing technique is newsgroup spamming and his sites get shut down quite often but the guy never give up :) he signs up with ipower and uses his affiliate link so gets $100 in commission and i think it costs about the same for one year of hosting. so his idea of marketing is pay for hosting and get the money back in commission, then spam the hell out of it till it gets cancelled. funny guy, but there are all kinda people in the world
