Do you think free web directories have some future. only making a directory for a/f programms like google/ yahoo bidadvertiser is good.. without having quality content.
    will this business pay.
and if some one is providing free directories how it can keep clean internet. these directories are source for spamming...

    what u say......

    regards

I had to give this a no vote, only for the fact that I have a directory and my passion does NOT revolve around spam, but rather to provide a helpful resource.

However, generally speaking, I when I look at all of these directories, they all have the same six free templates. It's like 'hey, let me register this domain and throw a script on it' and never check again until google pr updates, and hope I can make money from it.

What ever happened to diversity? Where is the passion in creating something of your own from scratch and watching it build?

    just my .02, but w/e

Ditto on the template thing. It's worse than that though because now you'll get not only no template but like 3 categories.

I didn't think it possible but these are lazier than DMOZ dumps.

I know they can't all be as good as mine ( see sig) but c-mon.

Free Directories, some are spam some aren't. Basically the owners don't have motivation to keep their directory high quality so it goes by the way side. However if they make money through Adsense of XXX per month they will have motivation to keep it going and to keep it high quality.

The most profitable free directory I know of makes a huge profit from its newsletter. You get free submission, but need to subscibe to the newsletter. It's a smart approach if you ask me. Probably makes more money than Adsense.

Very hard to maintain. Most good free directories either eventually go paid or there is some other motive for their existance.

a lot of niche directories I see are not spam. But I agree with the above that the turnkey directories out there are pretty pointless and useless.

Amen. Something I've definately noticed as well. Granted my directory uses a free script, it still receives a lot of attention. ;)

There's nothing wrong with free scripts. Its what you do with them that matters. Install it and do nothing and you won't go far. Skin it, design around it, modify it, give it a topic or however you make it yours and make it unique and you can still have a solid winner of a site.

No free directories are not spam. As long as the internet is around directories will be there too.
    traffic + free directory = $$$$
I wish I had started making free directories ealier.

Zeal shut down already? I knew it was going to soon, but was expecting more of an "out with a bang" type news and party rather than "out like a fizzle".

I have been running free directory for the last 11 Months, but only listed quality sites there, free directories have future when these are started getting large number of hits and some high traffic. These can earn by selling text/banner ads on them, as my free directories are already generating reasonable revenue :)
