    Although the traffic from forum sigs may not be large, it will most likely be focused, targeted traffic. Quality more than quantity.

    In my opinion they do help but not enough to influence rankings. A comment on a PR 4 blog that has to do with your topic will help your site much more.

    after about a week of using signatures in this forum, google started showing the forum links not only in the webmasters tools, but also in the "link:" function. this tells me that google counts these links and holds value to them. I have increased ranking in my target keywords dramatically from signatures just recently.
