Do-Follow -vs- No-Follow tags

I am confused! For generating backlinks, I've heard it said it is best to post to blogs with do-follow tags. Within this forum (thread: "Are There Secrets To Build Links?") member "kanwarjot" suggests using bookmarking sites that utilize no-follow tags. Why?

Being new to Social Networking and Link Building, can anyone explain the difference and implications of posting to any site that uses a do-follow/no-follow tag? Is there any benefit in posting to a site using a no-follow tag?

Dofollow links are counted by Google as a backlink for your site. Nofollow links are not.

Dofollow is better for SEO while nofollow has no effect on Google SERPs. You can still get traffic from a nofollow link, of course.

not sure why, could be a typo. if you need backlinks, then you need to make sure the forums and social bookmarking sites you post on are actually dofollow. search engines follow links that dont have any nofollow attribute in the link.

    Maybe he was tired... :D
NoFollow social bookmarking sites has no SEO value. They could just bring some traffic.

Thank you everyone for your responses. Now how do I check a site to see whether it is a "do-follow" or a "no-follow"?

There's this nifty FF addon called Search Status which I use to check for dofollow blogs. Do a search in Google for it.

If you don't want to install any plugins, one of the easiest way to find out whether the blog is dofollow is by viewing the page source and then CTRL+F to search for "nofollow". If it's present, then it's not a dofollow blog.
