do follow links can be consider as vote of every website so if you have many do follow links, it means that many people like, agree with your website and that is how you get ranked from search engine

You're close. I think what you are trying to say is that search engines like Google measure back links as a form of "voting" or "vouching" for a site. There are a lot of variables that go into just how much weight that vote (or link) will have. Things like their back link profile of the page/domain, total # of outbound links, relevancy, placement of the link on the page, and anchor text to name a few.

ps. there are NO "dofollow links." Google invented the rel="nofollow" attribute to add to links, it's basically meta info for links, and it tells search engines that the links are not worth counting as a vote. If links do not have rel="nofollow" then it is simply a regular ol' html link. Somewhere after the nofollow attribute was invented people started looking for links without rel="nofollow" attached & started calling them "dofollow links" or "dofollow scanner" & "dofollow directory"

Why is it when I do a search on my site and backlinks, all the posts I have left on forums and blogs etc are not showing? The only links that show up in the backlink search are those that have been manually added by other site hosts

Your PR won't increase if you have a lot of do follow backlinks. If you have backlinks from PR1-3 or so you will stay in the same range. Do follow links will help your site rank higher on Google search.

    Do-follow links.

Well, it is how one site links or connects to another. Do-follow links can be beneficial in to ways.

    It can increase your:
    1. Online Community Popularity - If you post a very interesting or a very useful content to a blog and says something like "go to this {url} to find out more", people who have read and became fascinated with your content clicks on the do-follow link and finds your site.

    2. Search Engine Popularity - When search engine spiders crawl a page and finds your do-follow link on that same page, the spiders also goes to your site. Search engines love it when they find your site all over the web. And when it does, search engines give you higher rankings. To do that, you'll need a ton of do-follow links posted on different sites. The page rank also increases with your site.

Note: It does not mean that having high page ranks also gives you high rankings for your main keyword though.
