There are two schools of thought, but the majority say if the exact domain name can't be obtained, having a dash does not dinimish its SEO potential (obviously not as good as the Exact Match Domain)

If you have a choice between the two, always choose the one without hypens.

For SEO purposes, the best domain extensions are: .com, .net and .org (don't use .info)
So you could try finding your domain name (without hyphens) on different extensions, before using hyphens.

    Hope that helps.

Another misinformed opinion based on reading something instead of practical experience. There is nothing wrong with using hyphens or .info domains.

You really do need to learn about SEO... Someone who has to sell his forum sigs can't be making any money to go to these conferences where industry experts discuss such matters.

So you don't walk away from this conversation with your head hung in shame, there are some domains that will do better than others because of how Google views them. But I guess you know this with your mass of experience.

And trust me, this has been tested by myself as well...

Purchase 6 domain names, all the same, but choose the 6 most popular generics. Test these sites for 12 months to see how various factors rank and you will see that this comes from experience. I am guessing that half a dozen domain names are beyond your reach tho?

Now, I think I can see your need to troll and post useless rubbish because you need to keep your customers happy so you can pay your mum rent.

Every time you open your mouth you show your ignorance. Quite amusing really :) for you to think that you know more than the leaders in this field is sad beyond belief. I feel quite sorry for you!

Why would I want to go to a conference. To network and speak to clueless people like you?

So you never been to a Google conference? Or one by experts that have multi-million pound companies and don't have to sell their forum sig to make ends meet? Lol... Actually it's clear that you don't have any hint of professionalism about you because you don't even know why you go to these!

And guess what, they have these big companies because they know what they are doing... Might seem odd to you to think that someone knows more than you, but guess what, with every ill-informed objection you waffle about, you have nothing to back it up because remember, these have been tested.

I really would quit with this now because you are showing ignorance and childishness... all you are doing is trolling to get your post count up. Way to go! Your mum must be so proud!

How old is this post? I thought Matt put this to rest in his blog Dashes vs. Underscores August 25, 2005. There is a googletube video out there that Matt answers directly about hyphen domains. If you are consistent with seo tactics and build your site like you would a non hyphen you will be golden. Key things to remember, good content=good reputation, good rep=good rank. Don't sweat the small stuff.

I would have agreed in the past, but now you can't really do that. If you had two sites that were equally as important to Google, but one of them had taken the time to cross every 't' and dot every 'i', which do you think they will favour?

Cover all the small bases as well as the larger one, and you are good!

I agree with the overall site you need to cross the I's and dot the T's. But hyphen in a domain shouldn't be stressful.

Yahoo definitely give more weight to such type of urls. Yahoo consider the importance of domain name but google is more intelligent and only weight the back links after url rewriting revolution in online marketing
