Does listing in directories really work? Is there likely to be enough of a payoff in terms of generating visitors to make it worthwhile?

It is worth submitting to directories. It drives more tarrific, gives back links, & helps to gain better PR.

Most people submit to directories for the backlink, not the traffic. You can get good traffic by submitting to paid directories and purchasing featured listsings on high traffic dirs.

Just by submitting to dirs you should be able to get a new site to PR3 or possibly PR4 if you paid for some.

lately i have came accross many articles o new google update known as "jagger" and many webmaters said that link from general directories has reduced the weight but niche directories will continue to have more weight.

    i am bit worried

Is there a way where you can submit to multiple seo friendly directories?

    Like software or something?

I'd be interested in buying that if its available.

Directories are definitely worth it. You get targetted traffic, SE benefits etc. However you cant only rely on directories, you have to do other things to help a site.

I have some sites that are ranked well based only on directory links and links from some of my other sites.
