Even though your backlinks don't show if Google has indexed the page and it's not considered 'spammy' they will can help with associating key words to your site. It doesn't seem to take that many entries to do this but it may take a lot more to get pagerank or compete on very competitive keywords.

Directories are like any other websites. So if you are linked then it will be counted, again this depends on what sites/directory you are linked to, some sites/directory are more effective than the other.

Well, I do receive some backlinks but not that many.. I have submitted to numerous directories already through free submission and not even half of them gave me good backlink.. Probably my site has not been approved yet since free submission takes the directory owner too long to review the same.. Hence, if you don't want to waste time, you should only post to high PR directories.. If you have enough budget, avail of the paid submission..

Directories submission is one of the ways to increase the backlinks. But it takes time.Only a very few directories will get you quick approval. So,it takes time to get listed in search engines but definitely you will get the backlinks from directories submission.

So many directory submission is only time wasting. I will suggest u to submit ur sites. These are technorati, blogcatalog, blogtoplist, blogged and dmoz web directory.
If u submitted ur site on these directories, that is enough.
Use spare times to write new contents.

The simple answer is yes - if your link gets accepted. Any link pointing to your directory is technically a backlink. It is worth taking the time to write a good description and submit following the general rules of directory submitting, so that you do get accepted to the good directories.

Google never shows all the backlinks. Just because they don't show it doesn't mean they don't count it. Besides, they're not the only search engine. Yahoo and Bing seem to usually show a lot more backlinks.

The issue is not whether or not it will increase your backlinks, I think the issue is whether search engines will count them as backlinks. As I said, any link pointing to your website is a backlink - even if they have millions of links elsewhere.

Search engines still seem to count links from quality directories. You just have to stay away from the toxic spam directories who list all links. The word "directories" of course is used as a loose term. To be an actual directory there needs to be a review process. A better word for them might be "free for all links" or "link farm" - and we know how search engines feel about them.

look Directory Submission never improved your back links. if Directory is quality one like dmoz, avivadirectory.com, seofriendlydirectory4u.com, yahoodir, vmoption.com directory if they approved your sites then you may gets back links in Google and also in Google Web Master tools but many of directory submission is not give you back links.
it's improved your SERPS quickly but should not improved your backlinks in Google.com

Directory submission is not a quick way to get back links. Some directories got waiting periods of weeks or months or years to approve your site to get listed. Google takes subsequent time updating such results, keep trying and you will see these results soon.
