Why are you trying to improve your PR.

You should be building good, related links that the search engines like. Article marketing, linkwheels, blogging etc. Don;t go chasing PR.

I'm not sure they ever really did.

They certainly do try to. For what reason? No idea. Their "penalization" generally consists of stripping PR from quality sites.

It really has no ill affect IMO given the fact that the PR factor never really gave that much weight to sites listed amongst other sites in such abundance. In other words, there was not enough PR to pass amongst multiple outgoing links anyway.

I think a directories main job is to pass traffic, not PR. Anyway, everyone should be focusing on TRAFFIC, not buzz words like PR. Anyway, I was always under the impression that the more PR you had, the deeper the indexed pages in Google. I've not seen that to be a reality. I have no less pages indexed on a site with NO PR than I do with sites that have PR6 or better...

I think the PR buzz word has kinda run its course.

To answer your question: Yes directories can improve your PR.

You heard right, Google penalizes directories and also blogs and other type of sites if they violate Google's TOC. Not all directories are doing that.

I do agree with others, don't go after PR, work on your content, SERPs and most importantly "conversions".

The thing is, link directories are all links and no content - It's almost self evident

PR affects Search engines? Only in the manner that thermometers affect body temperature.

Chasing PR is a waste. You can get decent SERPs without it, and that's what one needs. PR plays a role in choosing quality backlinks, but the PR of your own site is secondary to actual results.
