Yes, if you submit in the relevant category and use correct titles. No if you put your dating site in the real estate category with the title "Free Pictures for you".

Directory submission is an effective tool to get extra backlinks and as pointed out - placing them in correct category helps to get PR juice flowing in your direction.

In fact, domain appraisal tools look for link in popular paid directories such as yahoo or in free directory such as dmoz to rate your domains / websites value.

    Thx

Yes it does, but you have to choose the most appropriate category for your site. And do not repeat your title or description.

Leaves one to wonder just how much weight is actually given to links designed to do nothing more than manipulate search engine results.

    Think about it. ;)

I have! You did not see any impact when it comes to SERPS probably because of your niche/ Web site/ content update history and other factors that have to do more with your site and your promotional strategy...Else, it all depends on the directories you've submitted your site to! If you used a directory submission service that pushed your link into a few dozens of ( mostly free) directories with little to no editorial standards and that let webmasters dive into a pool of stuffed keywords, you cant really expect any positive outcome ;)

So we can say from above discussion that directory submission will be fruitful if we

    Submit site to relevant Category
    With correct titles
    Without repeating title
    Without repeating description.

    Thanks

I am using the list provided by directory critic. Submitted to top 100 sites listed.
I except these directories to be good. So many people trust directory critic.
    AND
I have stopped directory submissions now ;)
