Do directories help with the Link Building process?

Does anyone currently use Free Directories as a way to develop backlinks? I have been adding my site to Free directories for about two months now but Google is not giving me any credit for these. For example, when I search on:

    link:domain.com

in Google, I get nothing. Is this a valid strategy for me?

It takes time for them to show up in your back link profile. I take a little time every day and submit to directories. Over the long run they'll show up and help your site.

It also depends on how crawlable and sticky you make your site. If it is a blog, do you frequently update it, have a sitemap, and a few other things could be keeping you back from showing up. Also 2 months is too short of a time to wait for results.

You should first check if your link as been accepted in the dirs.

then, check if the page where your links are is indexed by google

then, do not check in google with link:url.com , if you want to check with google, use webmaster tools.

Also, google does not show all the links. use yahoo explorer to find your backlinks

directory submission still works for link building but all depends on the type of directory you submit to. some directories are SEO friendly and some not. also, some are on a part of large directory network and keeps getting 100s of submission per day and before you know it, you link moves so deep that googlebot doesn't even have a chance to crawl that page. if you submit to good list of directories, you should get good amount of backlinks

Don't use this, it's obsolete. Completely useless.

Like another poster said, try Google webmaster tools instead. Or yahoo.

You seem to be out of the loop, this has been common knowledge for a few years.

A simple google search got me this proof:

The link: command has always returned a small fraction of the backlinks that Google knows about, mainly for historical reasons (e.g. limited disk space on the machines that served up “link:” data).

    yes it is
    use
    link: domain.com

    space after colon

And it depends on the strategy you are using to submit the site in directories

    link:

The query [link:] will list webpages that have links to the specified webpage. For instance, [link:www.google.com] will list webpages that have links pointing to the Google homepage. Note there can be no space between the "link:" and the web page url.

So how does it take for links to show up? I have been adding to directories for months and still nothing. I have been using both Webmaster tools and "link:"

Use Yahoo Site Explorer to check for backlinks. Google does not show all links.
