Do directories get penalised for selling links? I have heard recently that sites are having their PR reduced for selling links. Does this count for directories that charge for links. For example a PR6 directory selling links for $10, would they be penalised and dropped in rankings for this or not? Would be interested to see what people think
Web directories Blogs Any type of site gets penalised for link selling and over promotion if thats possible. Didn't google even have a problem with google in japan selling links? something about they had a problem with a part of their own company doing it. Note: This is not exclusive to web directories, you can read about any type of website having pr reduced, serps drastically changing and you can read back 5 years and see it happening back then too. You can sell no links whatsoever and have pr reduced. Where theres link selling theres link buying.
What a stupid question!!!! Of course it will get penalized for selling links. Directories were not meant to sell links, but there were so many ass wipes that did this and this is why we all suffer.
@hyper: Not everyone on the forum might already know about things that you consider trivial. The stupid questions show that person didn't bother do browse / search the forum but wants to get his/her doubt clarified. @croftdog09: Yes, it's indeed true that directories and other type of websites can get penalized for selling links. Directories that 'charge' for links actually have to maintain that they are charging for 'review'.
It's pretty obvious that Google will penalize any sites that get reported for selling / buying links. Quality sites, directories, blogs, forums, etc. have nothing to worry about. It's quality that matters no the CMS you use.
Google is the only one who is allowed to sell links in the form of adwords... Everyone else will face the music sooner or later...
check out prolinkdirectory.com and linkdirectory.com Those guys are selling dozens of links, and are still PR5 non-penalized.
adword links don't pass pagerank or are indexable so that argument doesn't really work its examples like this that really show that Google doesn't know how to automatically find sites selling homepage links..those examples couldn't be more obvious and yet the site is not penalised, retains PR and has sitelinks. its the aviva formula for success again..
Hello... Any site can get penalized for whatever unknown reasons as your not told what you did wrong and it basically becomes a guessing game you have to try and figure out. laterz malcolm
the only reason I asked in the first place was because I see places like best of the web etc selling featured links and still keeping page rank, I was wondering how it is possible if you get penalized.
if you want to know then why have you started selling? asking for sponsors and mentioning your PR in the same breath is going to lose you PR quick
