Do directories bring quality traffic themselves?

Everybody knows directories are good for getting backlinks and for SEO. But do they themselves bring any quality traffic?

Depends what quality traffic means to you.

Some people say they get a bit of traffic from directories.

    In my opinion, no...
There will be those who come to this thread soon enough and claim their dir is different and deserves the large "review fee"...

As asked and answered 100 times before, dir's give you backlinks and SERPS but very little direct traffic...

Although there are exceptions, you will get the odd click from general directories but not enough to justify your submission effort. Some niche and regional directories may bring you more traffic.

Directories give me very little traffic; less than 1% but I'd still take that over no traffic at all. They do give you backlinks and SERPs as well.

My writing site sees a bit of traffic from a particular web professionals directory that includes web writers, web designers and graphic artists indexed by location. The traffic it sends is minimal but is highly targeted and often leads to a 'sale'. In fact, I'm just about to start a project where the client found me via that site. Even if this client is the only person that directory sends me in the next six months, I'm more than happy with the 5 minute investment of time to submit my site.

Crafty Tips, my arts and crafts directory, sends thousands of visitors, each month, to the sites listed. I keep the categories tightly focused and I am picky about what gets listed. One site, listed on May 25th of this year, has already seen 352 visitors from my site!

For the most part directory submission is about SEO. But, there are plenty of quality directories (niche, free and paid) that will also provide traffic; perhaps not 350+ visitors in 2 months, but even one visitor can mean hundreds of dollars or more in writing frees for me.

Is the few minutes it takes to submit a listing worth losing even one potential customer to a competitor?

No, directories are not good for traffic. Who "really" uses them any more to find sites? If your looking for soemthing, chances are your going to use google, yahoo, bing, msn, ask or any of the other search engines. I am willing to bet that no directories are in my top 100 sources of traffic.

And then, if someone does find your site through a directory, I'am willing to be that the bounce rate is going to be very high - maybe in the 90% range.

It depends on the directory. Niche directories that are listed in the SERPs for their category pages will send you traffic. They're hard to find, but they're out there. If you want traffic from a directory you have to start with a list of directories that have a high Alexa rating. Then check the page where you'll be listed to see if it ranks well in the SERPs for keywords that you don't rank for in your niche. If it does, then you'll get traffic from that directory page.

As YMC mentioned, the traffic from niche directories is very targeted so they convert better...and often get you a back link if people like your site.

directories are good for a "little" bit of traffic and serps, but can have a negative affect if too may links are from them ... you need a balance of links.

Most (not all) directories are good for getting money of newbies trying to work their way up serps 90% of the time, poor things will learn in time.

most directories bring no traffic but some bring a bit - it's all about seo and links with the directories as far as i can tell.

Is this because the average web user uses Google as a directory? 98% of all web traffic comes from the big G!

I do not think that most of the directoires are not bringing more traffic, because, most of them are taking long time to approve the links. As far as I know most of the directories are failed to be stable on their PR as well as on their traffic.
