I'm a newbie to this so sorry if my questions seems dumb. Do these directories actually help you? It seems like there are thousands of sites that spring up to give you directory submissions. Do search engines even pay attention to them? What is the value for someone to setup a free directory. Why do they bother?
Humans and Google ignore Built-for-SEO directories. DMOZ, Yahoo!, MasterSeek, and ZoomInfo seem genuinely useful.
I'm not sure that the script directories are of any benefit as woz2 said, I think the search engines 'don't like them' (although I have no proof of that). That said, I still submit to the free ones as there's nothing to lose.
The major directories like dmoz, yahoo directory helps you a lot. Other web directories which come up everyday also helps because you can get backlinks which are a key factor in search engine rankings.

I know directory submissions help in ranking your website. Search engines index these directories, give rank and traffic to them. Shows them in backlinks. What else do you want to see in a website? I agree with some people who said 'humans' ignore them. I don't think I will use a general web directory to look for a particular type of website. Some people set up free directories because they can make money from advertisements (directories receive good traffic and a decent network can get money from impressions). Besides some owners sell banners, sitewide links and some also sell submitter's email addresses )
I submitted a website to more than 300 directories. But after 45 days google did not take any link from there as back link and I clearly understood that google is not taking directories link now. But link exchange to a website really works. At the same time I put the link to a PR2 website and google is showing it as back link. By the way we provide Manual Directory submission service itbaymarketing.com
not true, I would say all directories are good. I can submit my site to a few hundred and instantly see results later that week.
Directory listing does help on PageRank, what you should do is first submit to the higher PR directories.
you should try yourself, not all people will sale they directory. On this day, people make directory for sale it, i not agree with them, because will make a lot directory that have spam submission also will hurt this industry
so let me get this straight.. you say directory submissions don't work but you are offering a directory submission service?
Some Directories are great for getting new sites indexed, and helps for BL and PR. You should look for quality directories that have been around for a while. Also paid directories are the most usefull ones
