Do companies monitor whois inquiries and snag good domains?

I've been doing a lot of domain searching over the last couple days to try and pick a good name for my new site. Yesterday about this time a domain that I searched for on godaddy.com was available and today it's not. I would just call it bad luck, but I noticed the info says it's registered to oneandone.com?

What does this mean? Does godaddy or other sites that help with name research sell search information to other companies?

    probably

If you find a good name you should try to register it directly. There have been several similar reports before.

Hmm. I'm kinda worried now. LOL, Maybe I should register a few that I've been keying in for the last couple of days.

Thanks for the tip, glad to know I may not be crazy. :D

As you did not register this domain, it is registered by GoDaddy (whois for this domain somewhere else) and if you want this now GoDaddy will ask you huge amount. Not all but few big name registrars like Networksolutions, enom, Godaddy, namecheap, hostgator are in this practice - if a searched domain is not registered they will take that name and will sell at higher price.

today i've been using www.bustaname.com because it has several tools in one and the quick check is awesome! At this point I guess I'm not too concerned with them stealing my queries as I'm just trying to rush through my list to check and decide as quickly as possible.

I noticed that moniker does not grab domains that I search. However, I saw the immediate buying of searched domains all the time when I was still extremely new. Type the search name in your browser.

here's something interesting. After googling my 81 domains names (both taken and free) over half of the free ones turned up giant query results at who.is and who.ws

Is this any indication of a good name?
