I notice that big blog/news sites like: businessinsider.com, weburbanist.com, techcrunch.com, often put a link underneath photos they put in their articles linking to the website they got the photo from. Is this all you have to do if you have your own blog/news site and you want to use photos from other websites? Or do you have to write ever single person and get written permission from them? What do these websites do? - Businessinsider.com, weburbanist.com techcrunch.com etc. I am starting a news/blog site and want to know what I can and can't do
you should not use others work - articles, videos, photos, music, graphics, etc., it is similar to stealing... big blogs buy images from stock images sites like istockphotos...
Most photos on the blog sites you cited are stock photos. I am sure they have in place license agreements to use those shots. A few are publicity photos that are sent out with press releases, clearly with the intent that publications are free to use them in connection with an article related to the press release (though not necessarily for any other article). A very few, like screen shots of a web video, may fall within the definition of "fair use" if the article they are attached to is specifically about the video. In general, most major blog/news publishers understand that unless you have a license, you cannot use a photo that you didn't take yourself.
If by chance a site does use an image that is copyrighted, most of the time the owner will request they take it off and there it goes. It is rare that it will excalate to a lawsuit.
