Do backlinks make or break a website?

I have just started a free online dating website (www.thebestflirt.com) check it out and if you see any obvious recommendations please state them.

Anyway i have a large facebook fan base, the site has been live a week and a half and has over 650 members. The site has racked up over 270k page views and 57,000 unique visits within a week and a half. My source of income would of course be adsense which at the moment considering the site has been live a week and a half is doing well. I want you to tell me the importance of backlinks? I dont want to be promoting my site forever on facebook, i am hopefully just using it to give me a head start. If so what are the best ways to go about getting legit good quality backlinks to the site?

google ranks a site based on how many backlinks a site has. they use the number of votes to determine the link popularity and the votes they count are actually incoming links form external sites. more votes/backlinks your site has, higher it will rank on SERP results.

it was the number of backlinks to begin with when all this started but the method got abused so much that its not the number of backlinks only that ranks a site, it is now more quality of links than the quantity. so if you have a lot of relevant contextual backlinks with anchor text, your site will rank high on search results. keep building links and you will get there
