They are usually hit with the duplicate content penalty. You will probably find that it is difficult to rank without unique content and good quality backlinks.

I had one that ranked really well but that was like 6 months ago and I really liked the niche so I decided to erase the duplicate content. The site took a dive, then I started writing original content and it's come back up. Not sure what would have happened if I stuck with it but ehh.

It is totally possible to rank and rank quite well with an autoblog, we do it all the time. Duplicate content penalties are not what most people think they are. It's not like Google sees two sites that have the article and makes some arbitrary decision about which one is the real one and which one is the duplicate. There's just no way of doing that.

If you create a professional-looking autoblog that adds value to the content and you are also including your own original content, your site will eventually rank well. Of course, you still need to do the normal SEO work like building backlinks to increase your ranks but that comes over time.

You can make almost anything rank. Whether or not you get any readers that will convert into anything is another story.

You can now use the ContentBoss Wordpress plugin to automatically make any wordpress post unique, and yet still readable, so it will pass Google, and not get 'pandalized'. Just thought you'd like to know, because obviously all the autoblogs that tried to hide dupe content using tools like 'thebestspinner' or translating back and forward to other languages got creamed by the Panda update.

I think it's a bad long-term business model. Sure, you might be able to rank now but it's clear that Google is trying their absolute hardest to find ways to reward unique content and penalize those who scrape/spin. I understand this is difficult to do algorithmically, but all signs point to it becoming less effective the more time goes on. You do mention you're talking about a combination of unique and autoblogged content. I don't think there's anything wrong with having some articles reposted from ezinearticles, wikis or other creative commons sources. But I'd recommend the majority be unique.

Best to use a hybrid approach, where you start off with unique content then gradually mix in auto-content. You'll be surprised by the long-tails you start ranking for.
The blogsense autoblogging platform is a good place to start, and it also has Content Boss spinning integrated.
