Been making my living with IM for about couple years now. Not a whole lot yet, something like $4000/mo, but it's a neat start - no need for 9-to-5 anymore!
I think there are many possibilities out there in different regions and areas. Here in Singapore, online business really starts to open up and many people came up with creatives.

I start in 2010, playing link sales, build 60+ sites and I got $1000/month but in the middle of 2011 my sites deindex, only 20+ sites survived. I start again and build my sites and learn another method, I playing adsense and chitika, build 2 home sites (Interior and Architecture) and car site for a 3 months and got $10-$50/day each site and...again my adsense and chitika account banned. Now, I want to try flppa and my next project is becoming publisher in tribalfusion...hope so...
Yes, many of this guys you see here are trying to make some $$$ online. It needs some patience and persistence to reach higher levels. Good luck!
What I like about IM is its diversity. Somebody makes $1000/mo and thinks it's a lot and then someone makes $10,000/mo and thinks it's not enough. I guess it depends on what you mean by making a living. If somebody makes $50,000/mo on IM, but can't make his/her ends meet because of all the debt they are in - it's not making a living at all.
Yes, i do live from getting lots of website projects ! If you've sufficient knowledge of it, then go for it.
I currently am not able to make a living just from working online, but in the future I hope to be able to.
