Do all pages on a site need to be optimized?

I have been optimiazing only my main index page to make it more google friendly, but have neglected all other pages on my site. So I'm thinking could this be the reason my rank is suffering right now? Do all other pages on my stie drag me down? Or does google only care about the index page for ranking? Yes...I'm a n00b as you can see :D

Definitely optimize all the pages in your site. Create articles for phrases and keywords that people search for. It took me a while to realize this too :) But once I clued into it, my traffic increased tremendously.

Absolutely, you don't want to miss out on all the little off-beat terms which people type in as well. Also having rankings for mercedez, Nissan etc. related keyterms will help your homepage rank eventually for the harder terms, especially if those pages have incoming links from related web sites.

    hope this helps :)

You home page may only really be optimized for a couple of KWP, each inside page can then be optimized for a different KWP or SE. Sometimes you can have 2 pages rank in google for the same KWP, that always helps attract more attention!

I recommend picking a few secondary pages on your site to start optimizing for certain terms. Bit by bit you can optimize more pages to cover more terms.

I think there are two sides to this. I would always try and optimise the mechanics of a site and certain pages.

But the mantra "content is king" is also important. Do you want 10 pages of good semi-optimal content or 5 of highly optimised content?

There is only so much time in the day!

I also think that too much SEO is pretty soul destroying to do :(

    You don't have to.

Just optimize each page that you want to rank well for. Normally that would mean all pages indeed but time contrains could mean you just focus on the 20% top revenue generators.

    Agreed.

Also, if I'm reading your question right Googles76, your ranking for your home page is not suffering because you've not optimised your internal pages.

If your navigation and stuctutre is bad, then your internal pages are not helping you as well as they could be but they won't be "penalizing" you either.

Ofcourse! Each page of your site can serve as a landing page for different keywords that you might want to target. Especially the main pages for some of the important sections. See an example on this Dublin Events site . The home page is optimized for some of the important and competitive KWs, and other pages like the hotels and car hire pages are optimized for other related keyterms.
