If the old domain ever spammed lots of sites and was punished by google, Google will not believe it overnight with new content.

I agree with mjwel. Site age keeps much importance as a point of ranking.

    1. Aged domain have high value, especially in backlinks.

    2. There are a few checklist before buying a used domain
    - Make sure it is not penalized from google
    - Check whether it is linking to any bad neighborhood.
    - Check for any copyspace or content duplicate issues.
    - Indexed pages on google
    - Check google analytics for search engine referred traffic
    - Check Genuine/Fake PR
    - Check backlink and analysis from various providers
    - Dropped domain?

Buying used domain is high risk compare to buying new domain.

domain age does help, I have a competitor who does very little on his web page but remains very high in the rankings. I attribute this effect to the age of his website plus domain and to some trust ranking which he was given from google.

If it is worthwhile to buy a domain and change the content - I hardly think so - I mean Google is as a hoster capable of comparing the moment of the changing of the owner and the content.

It depends on the domain. If it was in use as a website, and had quality backlinks, then that will help.

If it was simply registered but not used for a website, then it won't be any different to a domain you register today.

Also, even if you have backlinks, but you completely change the category of site, e.g. from a political blog to a online dating site, any previous backlinks may become worthless.

Well how do I' reviewing a few of these now - but the content is stripped out - so how do I check the archive of content and the quality of it.
