Do aged domains really work?

I have read a lot about buying aged domains and then doing seo or ppc to rank higher - however I have done a few tests and found that even if I buy a new domain with my main keyword in the domain, I get nearly same results.

However, like to make sure from others, if this is true?

I have also read and seem to believe that domain age has positive influence on search rank. I have also read that renewing your domain for longer periods of time, such as 8 years vs. only 1 year, will positively influence your ranking.

Sure, it helps a little and is considered when Google does the ranking thing. At least this is what Matt Cutts has indicated.:))

I wouldn't worry bout it too much though. The reason being that no one except Google knows for sure, and just how much a difference it does make. Think about who is advertising the most about "aged domain names"...The people who are selling them..

The point is not how old the domain is, it's link building.
If you get quality backlinks from authority sites like high pr or sitelinks sites,
your site would rank better and higher for serp.

No, this part is incorrect. Matt Cutts has confirmed that the length of time forward that a domain is registered for (in advance) is not a consideration, it's a rumour that is encouraged by the Domain Registrars.

Also, I've experimented in the past with buying a 12 year old domain, establishing a site and seeing if it received a benefit or rankings boost. I really didn't find any advantage in that.

Actually its a rumor that was encouraged by one of the last patents by Google.

Actually domain age only matters if you continually get backlinks during that time

It's not the age of the domain that matters, it's the number of quality links pointing to that page that counts.

Contrary to popular belief, the idea of domain age importance is not just a myth. Google has been known to reward websites with older domain names and penalize the newer ones. While there is nothing wrong with opening a brand new website, there is a certain degree of authority that goes along with having a domain name that has been around for a while. The age of a domain is not something that can be made up, or faked. You can’t pay anybody to vouch for the age of a domain. Domain age is an inarguable fact, and it is thought that the older the domain is, the better it stands to fare with the search engines.

I'm a little sceptical on domains getting any value from age. I have domains that when first registered got great seo results but these days hardly scrape through a few visitors a day and yet they have better websites.

    Which one exactly?

Age matters only for those who are anxious from selling aged domains. Age is not a ranking factor, and has never been.

Site age is a very important factor in the Google algorithm - but only one of many. This is a fact and anyone who says different doesn't have a clue. It doesn't mean you can't rank with a new site, only that it won't get a site age boost.

A domain that was created 10 years ago, but which never had a site is considered a new domain. No value. The site must have been indexed and had backlinks.

The algorithm is different for competitive terms vs. non-competitive long tail words. On site factors are primarily used for long tail, external signals (backlinks) for competitive terms.

Forget about buying an old movie site and then converting it to a health site. It is going to be a red flag and likely negate any value. But buying an old heath site and keeping it a health site will certainly provide an advantage.

from our experience, aged names are cached more frequently and appear sooner. however, as mentioned by mjewel it is only a part of the recipe.
