    hey guys

I installed xampp, and I am currently hosting my own website on my own home server, but if I want to assign it to a domain? Do I need Windows Server?

I am confused on how to make my web server a domain.

    Please Help me!

This really depends on your current setup.

If your home IP address changes (is not static) then you will need a 3rd party DNS service provider. Namecheap for example is one registrar that supports DDNS (dynamic DNS). You could also use any registrar with a site like freeDNS.afraid.org which supports Dynamic DNS.

If you IP address is static you just need a provider that provides DNS.

How do I know if my IP is static,

I have a static internal IP, but do I have a static external IP?

what I have a static IP, where and how do I configurate the DNS?

You need to get approved from IANA services(this is owner of all registers)

you must contact your internet service provider and find out from them if the IP address they have provided you with is static or dynamic. Then if you find out it is static you can choose almost any service like godaddy offers DNS service for free with all domains and you just use there service and provide them with your IP and there you go.

Now if your IP is dynamic you will then have to find a provider that offers a service called dynamic DNS.

They will also explain how to configure it.

This doesn't seem to be relevant at all to the question the OP posed.

If you IP address is static you will need to configure the name-servers for your domain with your registrar (the place where you buy your domain). If your registrar does not provide DNS services you will need to find a 3rd party service to provide DNS for your domain.

Search google for dynamic dns services, when you sign up for one of them they will instruct you in what you do.
