To all webmasters and admin here, I have a couple of questions: Scenario1 ---------- Say, one of my site is hosted wth provider X and domain of the site is maintained at domain registrar Y, I can log in to my account at domain registrar and make all kinds of changes for my domain like name server and all. I also hv my private name server with IP address. When I signed in with the host X, they told me to change the Name server for my domain to point it to their Name server. Now as I hv my own private name server, I do not want to use the DNS name of the Host X rather will use the NS of my own. So is that possible? (Please let me know with explanation) Scenario 2: ------------ Can I use any goddman public IP address as my name server? Scenario 3: ------------- When I do a reverse DNS for the IP address for my private name server it does not show the name of my name server, I mean the IP does not resolved to my name server. Is that Okay? Scenario 4: ------------- If I have a dedicated IP address from my hosting provider, what purpose I can use it?
1. Yes. So long as your nameserver is registered at the root with your registrar and you have BIND configured on the server, you can use your own nameserver to do whatever you want. 2. No, your nameserver must a) have a name (ie: ns1.mydomain.com) that is registered at the root and points to your IP address, and b) have an IP address that is controlled by you. 3. Yes and no; it depends on the usage. Your hosting provider has not set their servers up to reverse map the IP to your name. Depending on your host, they may or may not allow you to do so. If you don't plan on sending email from this IP address (or netblock, depending) - you don't have to worry about it. 4. Anything within their TOS agreement. Chris
Thank you for such a first reply. Still I am not convinced about the answer. Let me explain the scenario 1 in detail: The private name server and IP address I got from another hosting provider Z, so in that case can I use it. Now what I basically want is to use this name server for all my websites hosted on any hosting provider. Alos I want all my clients on Hosting X(reseller) and Hosting Z(reseller) to use my private name server.
Yes, you can. Step 1: Contact your registrar and have them add ns1/ns2.yourdomain.com to the registry zones. These will require your IP address(es). Step 2: Set up your DNS zone files on the nameserver properly. Ensure that they resolve locally. You can do an nslookup using server 127.0.0.1 to ensure that this is happening. Step 3: Ensure that UDP port 53 is accessible to the world through your firewall. Step 4: Provide your clients (doesn't matter where they're at) your nameservers that you have registered. You will have to configure EACH domain that your clients point to your nameservers in order to provide them zone service. And that's that.
