Gotta love this! If You See or Know of Something Wrong, Tell Us Then they say, "But don't do it here!". Then they locked the thread.
Interesting little tirad if you look closely. AOL Buys Netscape and scraps it to use IE exclusivly. AOL in bed with MS. AOL buys DMOZ. The DMOZ is used by google. AOL in bed with Google. MS starts MSN Search. AOL sucks, the DMOZ sucks and this is where google puts it's alliances? People with money that play the stock market are either dumbass rich people that don't need to care or just plain sheep. Something is not right when you start connecting dots.
Google doesn't care about human-edited directories. Google wants everything to be algorithmic. They see human-edited directories as archaic and unscalable. And then they base their algorithm on inbound links, which makes human-edited directories a critical component of web success... I was hoping that this post would make sense. It appears that I have failed.
I have found an unreasonable level of amusement in noting that two of the editors who berated and insulted myself and my web sites on the ResourceZone have now admitted that they have done so without ever looking at those web sites.
Will, If only all incompetence could be seen with the same level of amusement DMOZ, should be one of the best resources out there (as far as directories go) but it ain't. It's an out of date joke. If DMOZ is anything to go by, then yes G could well be correct that it should all be auto'd. I'm in the process of writing a new directory - with the aim of automating as much as possible (more because I'm lazy than any other reason). If nothing else, it's an interesting challenge. Can one person actually make an automated directory that even kind of work ?? - I suppose I'll see.
TOOT you were telling us that you were done discussing DMOZ subjects here on DP because VS scared you and you found out that someone else here was an editor also, what happened to that man Looks to me that you are right back in the DMOZ bashing game, I thought you were going to have a peace summit with the editors on your forum PS: TOOT, I thought I fired you that night when you said you were going to be part of the solution instead of part of the problem........What happened to that
There is nothin wrong with talking about it. But what is dumb is having these shouting matches, the anti DMOZ flames and the pro DMOZ flames without any communication. I am on both sides bro but not the sides of the constant arguing. Hutchensen just PMed me, he doesn't get it either.
This is what I just received when attempting to view the topic where I was being insulted, accused, and generally mistreated on the "Resource Zone":
Bummer, ya musta hit a soft spot. :/ I'm thinking of sending the editor that runs one of the categories I want into flowers. But I can't find her, she is MIA since January. Maybe some ass kissing is worth the end result. I hate doing it, but words are inexpensive when used to flatter... AT least they don't take money...Do they? Words when used too strongly can have a negetive effect, but you may be aware of that.
Hehheehehe... I guess I just became annoyed that the DMOZ editors sat around in their little kingdom like just so many mad third world dictators. Issuing arbitrary rulings, quashing dissent, and just generally making asses of themselves. I felt that this sort of misbehavior should have some repercussions. Well... I have picked up the gauntlet and I will now dedicate some time and resources to making those repercussions happen. Unfortunately, I looked at my schedule and that time cannot possibly commence before 16 May.
So what, I still stand by all my statements, I think there may in fact be some great editors, I am sure someone we know is, but the fact remains there is no communication, you must brown nose editors to get in or be considered and that makes the directory subject to conflicts of interest. If an editor can be objective I am sure his or her sections would be well managed, I am sure some of them even send e-mails telling folks that their submission has been received and I think they all should be required to do so even if that has to be automated. One of the reasons so many webmasters are pissed off is the communication issue. One has no way of knowing if the submission was looked at and what the status might be. PS: So TOOT you are now a double agent? Ever since I told you it was bad SEO to fight with the editors you seemed to change within 10 minutes of that post
That pretty much says it all. Once you see that little statistic, really anything... I mean ANYTHING... that anyone tries to say to justify the way DMOZ operates has no meaning at all. Note that this isn't a case of Will not hearing anything in two years. This is a case of sites sitting in queue and the editor(s) of those categories apparently not being able to find the time to even look at them to make a decision in TWO YEARS[/I!
WOW, TOOT has sold out and is playing both sides of the fence, next thing you know Minstrel will be telling me that he is going to become moderator at RZ and to please quit making objective comments on how DMOZ can better serve the community PS: Even though my comments would actually improve the directory
2 years is pretty bad....they really should just contact webmasters who's sites they are NOT going to list..... it's the VERY LEAST they could do, to stop all these un-necessary flame wars
No fear of that, AC. I have been disilllusioned with DMOZ for a few years now as well as convinced the project is based on a flawed concept that cannot be fulfilled, but I became really soured on the DMOZ and RZ editors in the course of a WebProWorld thread about 2 years ago started by Stephen Glover. The impetus for that thread was his viewing of an RZ thread where a simple query by a submitter triggered a barrage of flaming by DMOZ editors. Stephen suggested a simple auto-responder script could have prevented all that and offered to write one for free. Of course, in came the RZ and other DMOZ editors to lambaste him and anyone else who posted for daring to suggest there was anything wrong with the way they were doing things. And of course it hasn't got any better in the last two years... if anything, it's worse. Nuke 'em and start over.
Anthony, the other day you asked why always the same players are here. For the same reason there are always the same players on RZ and the other 300k editors won't show. Why do people want to get in the middle of this? There are many editors here on DP who you have no idea who they are. They could help but with this hatred they would be dumb to get themselves involved. I commend Rob for reaching out but my advice for him is to leave himself out of these discussion. We are not powerless here. If you want revenge, that is one thing, if you want to find solutions, that is possibe. If I appear like I sold out, then I am proud of the fact that I can see both sides without being dragged into anything I don't believe in.
