What are you going to do with this info Anthony? Can't we get a petition to AOL, get thousands of signatures .... Do they not realise how these demigod editors affect some peoples livlihood with this bizarrely managed directory of theirs? And the tone with which they speak to us.... why have the RZ if it is just a pain their butts to address our queries? Thats a very poor reflection on AOL, imo.

For the record: My sites are all in DMOZ so I'm not a disgruntled webmaster. My problem is with some of the crappy sites that are listed in there - dead links, spam sites, affiliate sites, sites that have not been updated in 7 years etc. etc. etc.

I once queried in RZ why a particular site was listed in a category it had no place being in and got an extremly arrogant, rude response to my very reasonable question - where do these people get off speaking to me like I'm a moronic idiot who's commited a heinous crime? It really is quite unacceptable behaviour.

I personally am done talking about DMOZ and them impacting the search engines in such a bad way. Something needs to be done.

    Advanced Submission
They should intro an advanced submission fee, say $10. Pay $10 to get your submission reviewed by a paid editor, include email feedback if not successful. They could churn through a ton of submissions very quickly this way.

    Consult Serps
If they took the top 20 results from google, msn and yahoo - checked to see if they were listed in the category, then generated a list of suggested sites to review for the category editor (this could all be automated) - you would improve the relevency.

    Monitor Search Spikes
Info share with Google and get a list of search phrases that are topical for the day or week - invest editor resources in these categories.

    Other Notes:
Dmoz is a very useful place for search spiders to start their crawl.... that's not enough. They need to work out how to make it a very useful place for internet users to start their online activity.

Editor frustration (i'm not an editor)
Two things about the whole submission / editorial process... people don't read the guidelines, a lot of those that do push the envelope with submissions as far as possible. The time wasters are the ones who should be shot - they are a big part of why the review time lags on for so long.

CandySmith I am not going to do anything with this information, AOL executives will read this and all the other threads here and it is up to them to do something with this information.

If they want to pay me 2 Million a year and give me stock options in AOL I will help them, but other than that they got a free sample here.

Maybe I can sue them if they use my ideas

Gotta love how before anyone even has a chance to say anything about DMOZ pro OR con, Simon (an editor of the RZ ilk) is already branding them whiners...
