AOL will read this thread, so why do you think that your voice will not be heard man AOL is investing 10's of millions in search technology and they own this database, wake up man This is free market research for them, if you want to hold your peace, do so, but if you have something constructive to say, by all means say it now
1. In children's sports, parents should never be allowed to coach a team in which one of their own children is a player (for numerous reasons including the mental health of the child) 2. In DMOZ, no editor should ever be permitted to edit or influence a category where he is a webmaster for eligible sites
See, folks... here is an example of marketing in action... start with a good concept and a catchy tagline and then tweak it to improve on the original concept
Well I have been mad also or I would not advocate firing all the editors and replacing them with automation. But being mad is not helping improve this database that is used by many meta search engines to come up with search results, being excluded when you have a good site can hurt webmasters, so we must fight until they do something to improve this situation. Can you guys come up with more constructive suggestions for AOL
So that means that you could not edit mental health or SEO sites Minstrel What is the use in having editors then
Yes. Like politicians, I would need to declare ALL potential conflicts of interest and distance myself from any potential conflicts of interest. As a psychologist, I could edit a mental health category but not one where my own sites would be eligible for inclusion. And I would not under any circumstances be permitted to add my own sites or have them included in the categories I edit, and in any categories I edit I would remove my own sites if previously listed. That would immediately eliminate the majority of current editors. The ones who remained would be those who truly have an interest in improving DMOZ instead of merely an interest in improving their own incomes.
Not necessarily. There are thousands of people who volunteer for various activities without payment just because they are interested in participating or in giving back to the community. And despite my general negativity about DMOZ, I do believe a small minority of the people involved are motivated more by interest in the project and altruism than self-interest and self-aggrandizement -- unfortunately, the more visible editors tend to be those in the latter category.
I do expect AOL to do something drastic with this database and soon, this is a public relations disaster of the greatest magnitude and it makes them look foolish to a very important constituency of theirs.
They are investing millions in search technology and are going after local search, don't you think their executives are looking real close at the DMOZ database as an asset to exploit
Interesting choice of words, however I submit that it's been exploited already. For AOL to not shut it down and check every site by hand would just proliferate that exploitation which is manifested in misuse by bad editors.
How does one "Shut down" a database? You know that this will never happen so why suggest this? They have to improve the database and the submission process and remove bad sites from the database, not shut it down.
Where is the Dmoz forum located? I would like to know why I haven't been listed yet. I tried 3 months ago and recenlty tried 3 weeks ago.
SiteTutor meant this one. http://www.resource-zone.com/forum/index.php? If you do not have the URL of the page you submitted to they will not help you, so when you submit you must have the URL to post on the forum or they will tell you to submit over again and then come back to the forum with the URL 30 days after you submitted to follow up. Who said life was fair man
Can somebody here show me where there is a category at DMOZ for internet marketing or real estate forums?
When something (internet or real life) get this huge, egos will always over shadow the original purpose.
