It is a 'D'irectory started by 'Moz'illa. Maybe there is more to it than that.

    Great info, thanks very much.
I have submitted my site 3 months ago on DMOZ, still waiting for getting it indexed..:( Does it usually takes such a long time OR my application is rejected ?

The funny thing is that DMOZ will not tell you anything when your site get indexed or regected. You have to wait, one or two month later, submit again if not indexed. Send them email one or two month later again if not indexed again.

I do think DMOZ shall change their working efficiency, at least shall give you something the status of the indexing.

You can, but there's a good chance you'll get banned for spamming.

Yes, you have to be careful. I would submit once every 6 months perhaps. It's a total waiting game. If nobody is moderating your category it can take years.

DMOZ, submissions are really frustrating, takes ages and you never know the status of the application, doesn’t help that so many categories are still waiting for editors

If you take into account that there are a seven digit number of sites awaiting review, and last month approx 13,000 new sites were added (after factoring out dead links removed), most of those 13,000 will have been non-English, and that editors tend to pick say 50% of sites from sources other than submissions, how long do you reckon the wait might be. Don't get frustrated, submit, forget, move onto more productive marketing activities. If it happens it happens. Console yourself with the fact that a listing has a marginal effect, if any at all, on your PR.

Add to that the declining number of editors in DMOZ who are actually doing anything and you'll get an idea of the scope of the problem and the speed with which DMOZ is going backwards. :)

you can always apply to become an editor. there's no rule saying you can't add your own site as long as it's appropriate for it to be listed there.

That's correct. There would be even fewer editors if that were disallowed.

you won't get banned for resubmitting. you will, however, be pushed to the end of the queue.

and this is a bad thing why? it's no different from people contributing to wikipedia based on their knowledge and interests-- if done correctly. it can be abused, sure, but it can be abused on wikipedia and any other site with a similiar styled user-submitted content system too, from anything ranging between the aforementioned sites and even things like forums.

That's only true if the editor edits the queue chronologically, which most do not seem to do.

I didn't say it's a bad thing. I said without it DMOZ would have a lot fewer editors. Whether that's a bad thing or a good tghing depends on your opinion of DMOZ and its editors, I guess.

DMOZ seems to prefer to approve editors only in categories in which they have little or no knowledge.

most don't edit chronologically, no. I know I didn't. I added the sites that were a "for sure" addition right away and I left the "take a closer look" ones... even if they were first in line. no guideline says you have to deal with site #1 in the queue before you can move to #2.

any way you cut it, if there are thousands of sites pending in a category and you're #1, you're in a better position than being #1,000.

if you want to get really technical I suppose being the last in a category is more likely to be looked at than one smack in the middle... but that's kind of human nature. I certainly don't suggest submitting every day to stay at the bottom though, that's the sort of thing that probably will be noticed.
