DMOZ ODP -- Is a joke and completly worthless. The editors are all people who became editors just to inflate thier own sites. There is no other reason to become an editor. I find it sad and pathetic that anyone would bother with such a joke. Before asking, yes, I am listed in DMOZ
I diasgree, it can't be a joke and completly worthless. Jokes are good, they make people laugh and that's very worthwhile. Also, monkeys aren't evil. Please stop spanking them.
So you have a motivation for starting such a useless and brow beaten topic, much like the alledged motivation of editors ... which is it? 1. Wanted to start a useless thread? 2. DMOZ hurt your feelings? 3. DMOZ rejected your editor application? 4. You were not breastfed? E. All of the above. Whether you were over generalizing about ODP Editors, or a group of people, your comments would bother me. You're going through life with blinders on, making generalized, biased and unfair statements. No matter the organization, there will be those with ulterior motives - how many preachers on TV wearing enough jewelry to feed a third-world country? But, to apply such statements broadly across the board is unfair and irresponsible.
Okay fair enough let me reword my statement DMOZ ODP is 99% worthless and 99% of the people adding sites are doing it for thier own good. Plus does anyone actually use the damn thing. Yes to 1 No to 2 No to 3 Yes to 4 For the other statements in this tread I don't know what your talking about
Do you have some sort of numbers to back this up, or is this just your opinion? If nobody used it, no web professional (or you) would care...
I'm not sure if it's used as a search engine, but I do know that a lot of people are using it for research. When you need to write a school paper on something and look for information on Google, you can get lost in information sites reflecting opinions, trying to sell products ect. While on DMOZ you have a better chance that there are the right sites giving you what you're looking for.
By his own admission, he just wanted to start a useless thread, so I don't see any point in engaging him further as you're only giving him exactly what he wants - a bunch of post in a pointless thread. MikeD - you're correct, many use it for this purpose and it's important too, for other entities who get the RDF from ODP. I'd bet many site owners use it to find relevant sites to link with, structure their own directories after, and so on. Alucard - obviously his opinion, and opinions are like ******* everyone has one, while others have the unique ability to be one.
I agree. Properly categorised information can be very useful My web designer sometimes gets work on subjects that she has no idea of... in such cases DMOZ proves very helpful to get ideas about what the site should have ...
