I have 4 websites all on different domains and the strangest part is not even one of them is able to make in. I really don't know what magic do i need to get in listed there...

this thread is for all those who can share their valuable info on how they were able to list in or almost succeeded in it as I am :)

The only trick is to have unique content on your site (in the editors opinion, not your opinion), be the type of site that we do list (and not one we don't list), and then just be patient and wait along with the other 50,000+ site owners who also have the very best site on the web, ;).

    Sites to not include:
    http://www.dmoz.org/guidelines/include.html#notinclude

    Editing Guidelines:
    http://www.dmoz.org/guidelines/

All information is located here, nothing is a mystery:
    http://www.dmoz.org/help/helpmain.html

Getting a site reviewed is a very haphazard process and there is no way for even editors to predict anything, let alone outside submitters. It might be the next day or several years from now.

I've had my site submitted by myself and a third party (I had no idea they were submitting arsgeek.com until they emailed me and let me know) at least a year ago.

    Still no listing. Ah well.

Excellent, and that is exactly what the purpose of allowing the public to suggest a site was meant for. Someone visited your site and found it so useful that they recommended it to us. That was the whole purpose of it, to help editors build good categories of useful sites.

Congratulations, it must be a good site, :D. Now let's hope an editor will get to review it and agree. The problem is, there may be hundreds of suggestions already waiting there and it takes time to look at them all.

that is true. but shouldn't there be a process where the spamed sites can be filtered or dmoz takes in only submissions of sites whose pr is above 1 or some criteria to differentiate spam submissions so that the really worthy sites get in fast..

because i really think getting listed in dmoz does great good for a site on over all internet status basis. As Dmoz is considered THE GOD OF DIRECTORIES

The Directory does have powerful filters, but I know very little about them because it's a security matter.

PR is not a consideration, it just means someone has manipulated the system skillfully enough to get you at the top of the search engine ladder. It's not something that I, as a former editor, ever looked at. Editors only judge the content on a site and whether it's unique for the category.

Design, traffic, worthiness of the company, longevity, PR, ect are really of no value to an editor who is trying to build a category. What I'm looking for on a site is some tidbit of useful information that no other site in that category has.

If ten sites have exactly the same information on them, then there is absolutely no reason to list 9 of them. Our focus is on providing the information seeker with sites that have a variety of information to choose from, not the same information, and describing it accurately so they can choose to visit a site or not.

It takes very little to provide unique content.

The problem is, editors are not bothering with the submission queue, so it would not matter if one or a thousand people suggested it if no one is looking at the suggestion...

Some do and some would rather discover them by other means. If they do that, chances are often good that the site has been submitted to the Directory, but in the wrong place or buried in 2 or 3 hundred other site suggestions, and may get listed faster than it normally would.

    It's happened with me. :)

Heh, so you agree, that NOT submitting can be faster then bothering to submit ;)

    Submit & forget
    Forget 2 submit

The wait times are about the same *snicker*

I made my first submission 2 years ago and I'm still waiting :p Its a unique site with no adsense or other rubbish. I wouldnt care about DMOZ if it wasnt for the fact that Google loves them so much...

What is the "average" time to get listed?

Average time is infinity. Plus or minus 5 years. :)

i really dont remember that any of my known sites got listed atleast in recent times...

"may be the big brands can be the trick in there.. smaller sites may take time to list. but it is quite possible that if big brands launches some new services , they get listed listed there in quick time." - this is not an observation, it is personal view. dont take it wrong sense.. thanks

I believe you got to get into yahoo directories first, then you get into dmoz. You don't just get accepted into dmoz.
