OMG! I am convinced now more than ever that there is absolutely no one in charge at DMOZ. There has to be someone that has the authority to change things. Anyone got a name?
Again, an excellent post, brizzie. What I don't understand is why doesn't every DMOZ editor feel this way? or if they do, why do the views of the bottom feeding molluscs in the adult section carry more weight? why does the adult section even exist? Let's be honest here: If the goal for DMOZ editors is to compile a directory of sites that "add value to the internet world", the adult section is a complete and utter violation of that goal. It should not exist. Period.
Dateline NBC is doing a series of shows to expose those pedophiles that prey on kids. Lastnight they were talking about how pedophiles use myspace to target these kids. I believe maybe a nice little email to Dateline showing this thread and pointing them to the listings in Dmoz you have found will create interest and maybe create enough press to start an investigation in Dmoz and their listing practices, not to mention but the bad press it would create for Google is enough to cause Google to maybe take a hard look at Dmoz as well.
As a father, I am completely shocked! For the life of me, I just cannot understand how an organization like DMOZ would allow such entries. It would have to be an editor that submitted them for their own personal gain. No self respecting human would do such a thing, unless it is for their own gain. As for the statement about the sites not actually having illegal content. HOGWASH! Illegal content or not, the name and description implies that it does. That alone should be enough to discredit the site. What is the difference in that or listing a site that advertises crack, but really directs to a gallery of plumbers asses. It is still deceitful, and it is still an advertisement for illegal activity. And to think. The most popular search engine on the net endorses DMOZ.
Brizzie, I completely agree. I asked questions about this (and some related) categories in the DMOZ internal forum. The original posting about childpron is already being discussed. The cherryboys thing (which has nothing to do with the original complaint as far as I can see) is also being discussed in the DMOZ forums. Most of their "sites" were listed in 2002. And although the deeplinking guidelines in adult are intrepreted differently than in other parts of DMOZ (which could have made these ligit listings in 2002) I agree that a site that has over 200 of the same kind of listings is suspicious. Editors are aware of both situations and will investigate if they are accepatble (atleast one is not acceptable for me). I will keep you informed about both situations.
So, you can find links to porn on all the search engines too! I do think that a lot of porn sites should be banned quickly, especially those that scrape keywords and use referral spamming
What is there to investigate? These listings either are OK by the rules at DMOZ or they are not. Also, why does there have to be a discussion within the internal forum over there before someone takes some kind of action? Who's in charge of the darn thing anyway? Maybe we should send this thread to that person for a response.
The people who are in charge are totally fine with these things. They have been doing it for many years before this thread and they will be doing it for many years to come or until Google drops DMOZ. Do you really think that deleting 1 site solves any problem? The editor just pays $8 and buys a new domain name and add hundred deep links to the new site in DMOZ. The problem here is that couple of DMOZ editors really believe that they have some kind of power to change things but the don't.
I checked that site out actually. It's some kind of support group where these guys (and gals) tell each other there is nothing wrong with their attraction to children. What sickos!
I particularly thought one member of Lifeline's story was intriguing. He decided he better quit "scronking" young boys, so he had a sex with a deaf-mute woman. Buddy, do us all a favor and follow through on that suicide plan. PS. The deaf woman was a lesbian!
I don't get why they have those porn categories at all. The easiest and only real solution to prevent shit like this to happen is to get rid of all porn categories at once. If they won't, they surely will lose their reputation on a short or long term.
Stupidity plus porn is the biggest business on the internet...... I wonder if people have ever watched porn on AOL
Instructions found here: http://www.corruptdmozeditor.com/ Also you can buy sites that are already listed. Also check out eBay. Every so often someone will be auctioning off an editor account.
