Getting listed on DMoz is a nightmare. Even though you have right content for a category you never know when they gonna list you.
It may be some important as per ranking and others, but for lot of people its a lets forget and move on situation.

Nothing is offered as a service, no expectations should be held. It is a volunteer project not a listing service.

Those who think so need to get some rapid education on web marketing. This forum is a good place to start. Many top sites by rank have never been listed - how did they do it - many listed sites have 0 rank. The concept that a DMOZ listing is important is a fantasy.

And they are very sensible people.

Actually its a pretty sound concept. Fantasy concepts come into play when you start thinking you WILL get a listing ;)

As if it was a fair & open system with enough staff and support to maintain itself, it could be (would be?) one of the greatest things to hit the internet since, well...the ODP.

So in theory it's a fantastic idea, in practice though, it's simply just a conspiracy.

    Let me re-phrase...

So in theory it's a fantastic idea, in practice though it's a network of Meta's that work as SEO experts that all publish on their blogs just how important and needed the ODP is, while in reality there are serious flaws with duplicate content, inconsistent listings, and notions that it's more important then any other directory that may or may not list your site.

    Is that better?

The concept of it is still fantastic
by my way of thinking, and I whole heartedly think that humans do it better...though sadly, they also do that corruption thing better then robots too ;)

dmoz is the most important directory on the net and because all the search engines give it so much respect if you are not in there then you are not important enough to get lots of free traffic from Google,Yahoo etc (that's the way I see it anyway)

I had over 4,000 pages indexed in google and yahoo before I got listed in DMOZ. The only true benefit of getting listed as far as search engines go is all the raves you'll get from the Alexa engine, which is skewed beyond repair anyway.

As far as the big three actually see it, it's no different then any other link out there. And as for google, if they found it important, maybe they'd update their own directory more then once a decade ;) (They have not updated their listings since 2005!!! ~ so hows that for important ).

    WRONG and a BIG LIE

Look at this Google gave this site an AUTHORITY STATUS but only to be whacked by MOTSIE. So you mean DMOZ is much better than Google there ? Unbelevabel.:D

The concept of human reviewed listing died when google came with its mathematical scheme.
Yahoo still tries to do it and lost the search engine wars.

DMOZ is a concept that has dried up

I looked at dmoz to submit links to sites that are listed on the dmoz. 80% of the sites in my category have not been updated in years!

If you mean by service, that Google uses a DMOZ clone then you may be close...

Yes, but I'd like to point out, they have not updated their directory in almost two years now. Webmasters are starting to assume that Google has forgotten the project.

since google use data from DMOZ, they should consider buying it. then hopefully it would be more organized and nicely managed.
