DMOZ submission strategy/advice

    Hi guys
I just started my business: I'm an agreed distributor of pro machines sold all over the world. I have different country domains for geotargeting (sites in implementation). I want to maximize my efforts to be more "visible" in US and Canada.

I'm wondering: better to submit in an English language category ? Or it doesn't matter --> once you are in, you get all "visibility" benefits (even if submission is in another language)

Any other advice well welcomed :)
    thanks !

Today there are actually very few perks of being listed in ANY directory. People do not use them like they used to, and in turn Search Engines have stopped placing as much importance upon them. That said, a link is a link is a link, and if you are going to submit to directories, then submit to all the free ones (and paid ones if that's your fancy), not just to the ODP...then once you do, treat all of them the same by ignoring them and moving your focus back to your site and how to promote it outside of the directory circuit.

No you can't have multiple listings. Editors can at their discretion list a site more than once, but submitting more than once, unless it is to a topical and regional branch, is against our guidelines and can get you banned as a spammer.

Why you don't try English rather than other language? It will also give more profits that you want.

But you can have many deep links even in a single branch (like Regional) which often is not a whole lot different from having multiple root listings.

Editors decide if a site has more than one listing and submitting several times or to several levels can get you banned as a spammer.

She is right. While a site having nearly 20 thousand listings in the ODP is considered spam, its spam that was put there by editors. Had the site owner actually suggested the site it would have been banned... so there is really a fine line in what type of spam the ODP will allow. Generally it's researved for such fine sites like .gov, .edu, and editor owned domains like luckymojo & Topix... webmaster submissions, even if they would add something to the ODP and having multiple listings would help the end user, will be treated as spam and deleted and the site banned.

So thanks Anon for pointing that out!

That is not correct! According to the page that submitters are supposed to read do NOT have that as part of what is not allowed, and by example from the rest of the directory, it should be perfectly normal and natural to submit deeplinks within the ODP, as they are littered throughout are OK according to the editor guidelines, and are not excluded from the submission guidelines.

    I repeat:

If you want visibility in Canada, get a .ca domain. Also, if you have a Yellow Pages listing, even better. You'll show up on Google maps.
