I got lucky in the freelance writing category because I know the editor... of course, if the area you want isn't edited, you can try it... volunteer, but might be worth it. Anne Wayman www.aboutfreelancewriting.com
ok, there is a lot of misunderstanding about how the editor thing works in the ODP - let me try to explain, for those interested. An editor can be a so-called "named" editor for a category. This gives them the right to edit sites in that category and all direct subcategories (i.e. not those marked with an "@" next to the category name). This category name appears on their dashboard, and their editor name appears at the bottom of that category. In addition, there are over 200 editors who have the rights to edit anywhere in the directory. So, in terms of who could possibly review a submission, it could be the named editor for that category, any of the named editors in categories above that category in the tree, or any one of the editors that could edit anywhere. There are no "territories" in the ODP - noone "owns" a category. There is no way of knowing how active a particular editor is, or will be. So sending feedback to a particular editor is hit-or-miss at best, and is not a reliable way to improve the time taken to review the site.
Not just luck, you must have a good name in the field of writing, since I recogized it from your post. I do work (and ODP editing) relating to books, developing software for authors, and producing back-of-book-indexes. [I just took an eveing workshop with Barry Brown on writing freelance for magazines. Every heard his name? Looked like too much work for too little money]
Yeah, I do have a decent rep... tell me more aobut your work... software etc. No, I don't know Barry Brown... too much work for too little money... you mean the result you expect from his workshop or the workshop itself... have a url? Now if I could just get google to index me Anne www.aboutfreelancewriting.com
His workshop was good, entertaining evening. I was thinking of doing some writing for magazines, my wife already does some wrating and we both went. It just seemed the amount of legwork spent making contact, promoting yourself, etc. on top of the time spent writing did not lead to making too much money. As far as the rest, it's getting off topic for this thread, I'll PM you.
Only posted my site a couple of days ago - but it sounds hopeful as it is in the backpacker section - 2 years is a long wait!
Congrats zman. Yes, there sure are some good editors at DMOZ. I can speak very highly about one of them, Alucard, who is also a great contributor to these forums
