I don't understand all that redirect stuff, so forgive me if I sound silly...but if Googlebot got looped due to the main page reloading itself, why aren't we affected?

It also seems strange that many other directories got dropped from the SERP as well *shrug* but like I said, I don't understand all that 301 stuff.

I think they should work on it a little bit more , the categories of good dmoz editors should not be filtered :)

A 301 redirect redirects a page to another, while telling the search engines it is a permanent move. If you 301 redirect "www.yoursite.com" to "www.yoursite.com/widgets", every time someone types "www.yoursite.com", they will be redirected to "www.yoursite.com/widgets". Dmoz made a mistake by redirecting "www.dmoz.org" to "www.dmoz.org", which creates a never ending redirect loop, because every time "www.dmoz.org" is loading, it will redirect again to "www.dmoz.org", and this never ending loop was blocking the googlebot from accessing the homepage.

Matt Cutts said the googlebot tried to access the page for a couple days unsuccessfully and then gave up. Once Dmoz fix the 301 redirect problem, the homepage will be indexed again. He also said that since the inner pages don't have a redirect, they are not having any problem accessing those.

So it is different for bots and browsers? Interesting... I'll keep that in mind.

That is one of the most important SEO rule - why do you think that crappy websites are often at the top of SERP. ;)
