Yes perspective is a funny thing, if all the people suggesting sites have an ulterior motive and every editor shares your perspective that the suggestion pool is not as good as just surfing around then shut off the suggestion links.
Get out there and surf and qwell all the claims that you are all on the take for posting links for friends or for $$$. Once you do that one of two things will happen:
    1. Not a damn thing and ODP will go on as usual
    2. Half the editors will stop editting

    Let's see which?

There are a bunch of editors on DP, let one of them tell me a good reason for keeping the suggestion links turned on. The value and reputation of ODP would go up ten fold once you did it. So tell me why you don't?

    Simple ;)

Its not my call. As much as I am allowed to express an opinion, it remains simply that......my opinion.

No editor can speak for ODP, AOL or anyone but themselves. We all partake of the hobby under set guidelines so it's very unlikely that I, or any other Editor, could change this sort of thing.

Anyway......if you want to be an editor, try again. If you dont.......your choice.

    Cheers.

Happy New Year to you all!

But at DMOZ you get sentenced without ever seeing evidence against you or can give your defense and there is only one sentence possible - banned for life - it makes no difference what unknown crime you committed... murder, traffic violation, littering you always get the life in meta court.

Best way to help is to stay as far as possible from DMOZ. :p

That's odd, usually editor that openly declares his/her interests in certain topic comes under suspicion for Conflict of Interests and is soon removed, so note to all still active editors don't fall for this meta trick! ;)

It is sad to see that people blatantly lie, or perhaps don't mention everything? What you have stated is so far from the truth

If you openly declare your interests, there is no problem being an editor. My interest is darts, my dart site is in dmoz, i am a volunteer with dmoz and i edit the category that applies to both of my websites. There is no problem, i am not hiding this and have declared all details.

My secondary dart site is also a dart site, BUT, it is not listable and i have not listed it. Thats the difference and that is where conflict of interest comes into play.

The site does not meet all of the guidelines, so i do not list it. Open and shut case, no conflict of interest and not an issue. If i was to list it and provide preferential treatment, then it would become an issue.

I believe that most fair minded people would understand the difference and see that your statement is far from true. They would also see that i have done over 5000 edits, on sites that do not belong to me.

But i guess i will still be accused of being lazy, corrupt, self centering, etc etc etc. ;)

I got removed so I know its 100% truth!

I've declared all websites I own or was ever affiliated with including ones I hold a grudge against (some obscure website which has been long dead).

And after removal when I took over one domain and made it public at Dmoz Resource Zone it got delisted from DMOZ in a millisecond so DMOZ editors can work really fast when they want to!

Before I become editor my 2373+ page multilanguage multitopic website had already 9 listings now only 4 remain, so I could hardly be accused of making those listings! Unless metas can fake logs too.

I was planing to add over 100 unique websites none of them affiliated with me before I got removed so that tells me everything about DMOZ and its motives.

You can still help to build the directory: http://www.dmoz.org/add.html . :)

Coincidentally, just before coming here, I was looking through the site suggestions for a category of interest to me, and to my astonishment one person had suggested an excellent site and written a proper title and description which didn't need any changes! In nearly 100,000 edits, this is only about the 3rd time this has happened to me. LOL
The site was suggested only a few days ago, and is now listed, largely due to their efforts in finding the right category and following the editing guidelines. Oh and the fact that I felt like editing there, of course. ;)

The great myth of ODP editing.

The truth is that so many of titles and descriptions are copies from other sites and the roles for ODP title and description writing are so simple that any idiot can do it as the current list of senior editors proves. ;):D

Where is the line drawn? I listed my own site along with a handful of other sites. I got rid of all the dead listings in my category, and fixed several other errors... but I have been accused of conflicts of interest several times. Sadly, the only people that have pointed the finger at me have been editors... so fair minded people? Far from true? Sorry, but I have to agree with Ivan as well, and I agree with him based on personal experience with the ODP as well.

I did, few got through and ones that use to be my former categories never. :(

You mean same guidelines by which I've submitted description to my website amongst two other in my application for another category to be certain it passes meta inspection only to be delisted few months later by some overzealous senior editor claiming its not according to guidelines!

Editing guidelines are another joke of DMOZ since anyone can claim anything and accuse anyone of anything they want. :(

I just got an infraction for this post which is totally not cool.
Running Up Post Count/Post Has No Value
    Jan 5th 2009
    5:15 pm

I don't run up my post count as I have 3,000 plus posts and don't sell sig links.
Post has no value ? Hahaha ! I answered the original poster question about dead sites. In this case I just have to publish the whole category so that people can really see what dead sites are there and how solid the stuffing of titles.

You put some proof in here you get infractions ? That's BS.
