Just re-launched my site http://www.fanslogon.com for college football, basketball and lacrosse fans in October 2006. (feel free to send feedback or ideas!) 1. Been trying to submit to DMOZ and - figures - their site was down... still is. Is there anything I can do to get listed with DMOZ so that Google (etc.) will improve my ranking (or do I need to WAIT until H*LL freezes over? 2. What other directories are there that I need to know about? I think I'm listed in a couple (can't remember specs right now) but want to make sure I haven't missed anything. Thanks in advance.
Make sure your site is a quality site and ready for submission to DMOZ. Then when/if they reopen for submissions you will have a better chance of being accepted. With DMOZ it has always been a submit and forget scenario. In the mean time keep working on optimization, link building, reading posts for ideas etc.
I'm in the same pool. I have been trying to get a quality site in dmoz for over 4 months now. Years ago we had no problems.. now it is soo hard. NOt sure if it is just the categories we are going for or what?
Yeah, I made sure of that prior to my first attempt. Believe the site is up to their scrutiny. At least I hope so!
4 months isn't that long really (in dmoz terms), especially given that dmoz hasn't been working for over a month. My question is what your definition of trying is? Since pretty much most everyone will tell you to suggest and forget, there isnt much to try (other than to continue to add to your site on your own) so the only thing I can think of is multiple suggestions which obviously is against the submission instructions.
Can you please point at the original content on your site. Random clicking on pages revealed little other than Associated Press news stories and forums with very few posts. DMOZ only lists sites containing original content and a cursory check of yours says to me it does not qualify. If there is original content it needs to be prominent so an editor cannot miss it. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
I haven't looked at his site but I trust brizzie's assessment. I assume justbadco1 will either tell us where his unique content is located so we can see it, or he'll make changes to his site based on brizzies feedback, which is after all what the original poster was asking for. This is off topic and I apologize for that, but in reply to your post, we all know that sometimes sites become abandoned, they can change over time, and there's the problem of bait and switch, just to name a few of the challenges. If I recall correctly there are even threads here at Digital Point selling DMOZ listed sites; I imagine many of those are intentionally changed after the sale. Lorddomain, if you are an editor with the proper permissions I know you'll delete those thousands of sites once the editor's server is back online. If you aren't, please feel free to pass along your list of the thousands of sites you've found and I'll take care of it asap. Thanks for your help. It's appreciated.
if you have good site and if you submit to rigth category .i'm sure that they will accept your site. but you must wait them to reopen submit form
I've tried for over 2 years to get in. This is a quality ecommerce site and still cannot get into the proper category. My competition is there but I cannot get in. Google needs to start it's own directory and dump DMOZ.
"Service Temporarily Unavailable" Temporary: That which is to last for a limited time; ephemeral; transitory. Temporary has no fixed meaning in the sense that it designates a fixed period of time, but is used in contradistinction to permanent.
It has been more than a month to fix the hardware bug big sister. But heres my Translation to Temporary Unavailable.
Poor popo, you have no faith. I'll try to remember to ask Santa to bring you some for Christmas if I'm not too busy editing.
DMOZ is NOT down! DMOZ is up and running and listing websites by the thousands. There is no backlog at DMOZ!
Ah, the very definition of blind faith. That man is my hero, thanks for getting his input. I feel more confidant than ever now.
Okie. Okie. They are not in power anymore most are dead and in prison and the others had switched allegiance. There is a new world order which is becoming Fast Growing and a better alternative to the Previous World Order. Now is the time to build the new order. Old Regimes are falling. I feel more confident now than ever DMOZ is gone.
A list of directories on sports might actually help this webmaster. Though of course the best advice is: find them yourself: you know the terrain.
