Follow the guidelines and suggest to the correct category using the button on every page. Then forget it because it can take from a few days to a few years to get a review for a possible listing.
Don't bother with following the guidelines, or even submitting to the correct category. You'll see if you follow Anonymously around that she claims to be an editor. So if you believe that, you may believe some of her other posts. For instance, she claims that if you submit to the WRONG category you site will NOT be removed like the guidelines say, but rather it WILL be moved to another category. That shows right there the guidelines are just guidelines and do not HAVE to be followed. Yeah, yeah, following them may help, but according to this member, thats something that's not fully needed. Likely because there are sooooo many editors around forums like this defending the integrity of the ODP that there are just not enough editors left to actually add pages. Then again, there has been NO PROOF what-so-ever offered that Anonymously is was or ever will be an editor, so maybe you should just not take anything she says with too much value. I was an editor, so have some experience... Just make sure you have content and your site is aimed at your readers rather then search engines, then submit to whatever category you think is the best then simply forget about the entire thing. Move on to the next free directory and do exactly the same thing, then repeat till you run outta free directories. When you run outta free directories go back to your site and add more content. If you are not submitting to other free directories, then you are wasting your time with the ODP, as it's nothing more then that.... 'just another free directory'.
I've submitted my site annually, for the past 4 years, and still received no response. Either the editor of my category is a competitor, or the category is close (not a content issue, as I outclass my competitors).
as a web designer i have submitted around 50 sites over the last few years, and i don't think any of them have been included. it seems they are very understaffed there or something
We are all volunteers working in our spare time to collect and collate sites into categories. You will be more than welcome to join us, press the button, apply to edit this category, on most categories. But learn the ropes in a smaller category before you apply for a large one. Look forward to seeing you there. #SpiritDrinks You are welcome to apply too. But if you don't please remember we are volunteers, we do work as and when we have time, and it can take from a few days to a few years for a review for a possible listing. No need to re-submit it aint lost just waiting for someone to volunteer to work in that section and use the suggestions as their resource for working.
No, they were proper business websites for my clients. I agree the ones in my signature would not be accepted, and I have never submitted sites like that. Actually I was an ODP editor many years ago. But because I owned a web design and hosting company, they wanted me to keep an up-to-date list of all my customers in my editor panel. But because of the number of clients coming and going each day, this became too difficult to do, too much time just to keep remembering to update this list, and this was not acceptable to them, so I closed my editor account.
Funny because I applied to become an editor in a category in which my site has yet to approved and it's been over 3 months. They sent this in reply to my application: Make's you wonder..
Makes you wonder what? All the email is saying is that they do not want new inexperienced editors let loose to potentailly damage a larger category.
Actually the email was regarding "you have chosen a category that is already well represented" because there was only 30 site listings in the category I applied for. Regardless, my point still stands that they should be more eager to get editors in categories even if they don't have a lot of listings. May not help a lot, but could still help the approval process.
DMOZ is always eager for new editors; they add around 150 new ones each month. The category you applied for may have had 30 sites, but what about subcategories? - that probably made it too big for a newbie.
http://www.dmoz.org/Arts/Movies/Chats_and_Forums/ I still don't think that's a lot listings. The subcategories only amount to about 40 sites as well...
I can't answer for DMOZ, but they obviously assumed that it is too many... apply to one of the subcats and see what happens. You can apply for promotion to a bigger category further up the chain after you have established that you can edit within the guidelines.
That category is intended for general movie chat and forums. Websites focused on a specific movie belong in that movie's category such as Arts/Movies/Titles/A/Avatar. Also, be sure to look at current listings and our editor guidelines to get some idea of how we write titles and descriptions. You'll have to do that when you become an editor so you might as well impress by doing so beforehand .
LOL Jim, I like your sense of Humor You call it write, I call it massacre titles and descriptions. fastreplies
We receive so many comments about DMOZ is corrupt or must be corrupt, yet when one of the protections DMOZ insists on ie to know which sites an editor is associated with in order to try and ensure the editor does not treat those sites unfairly, is also now being criticised as being too much to do. I don't have a problem with DMOZ not accepting the situation you tried to present to them, but if you can't be bothered to keep up some of the procedures to keep the directory from actually being corrupt then please don't whinge when no one has enough spare time to review your sites. #shadow82x JimNoble vetted new editor applications for many years and I suggest you listen to him. I just want to add a couple of things The first being that category has few, actually only one, sub category. The others are actually 'links to other categories, that means that they could be sub cats there but are not actually listed there, somewhere else is deemed more appropriate, that means that editor does not have the right to edit in any other category but 'usenet' a real sub cat there.. Secondly if you check through the editor listed there you will see this is their only category and because of the nature of that category it might be deemed a little crowded, I have to add I don't ever get to see editor applications just working on general knowledge. Thirdly most editors had to apply more than once to become accepted. I am sure if you have some knowledge in the area then you will have no trouble finding another category and completing a good application form, especially if you do as you have been advised. Good luck and hope you do try again.
it wasn't a complaint or a whinge, i was just saying that's why I'm not an editor anymore. I cant' comply with the requirements.
