I want to update my url, when I go to update url form, there is a section which asks for email, when I will update my url, will I get a confirmation email from dmoz to verify or they won't send me any details? Anyone know who has updated his URL successfully?
There is no need for a volunteer to take the time to send you an email when changes to a listing are made, because you will easily see for yourself. Update Requests, like all editing tasks, are processed by volunteers, so there is no time frame involved, but they are often handled fairly promptly when it is a matter of quality control. However, please be sure to resist the temptation to request an unacceptable title or description, because an editor might assume that everything else in your request is equally unacceptable, and move on to something else. The form asks for your email so that there is a record of who made the request. Also note that for quality control issues like dead, hijacked or redirecting URLs, there is a dedicated thread in the external editor forum.
Thanks makrhod for your reply. I recently updated one of the listing, and hopefully it will be reviewed, as it says it can take about a week or more. Hopefully it will be updated soon.
With a volunteer organisation, there can be no time frames. As I say, such requests are normally handled fairly quickly, but it could be hours, days, weeks or months, depending on when an editor next chooses to work in that area. That's why I gave the link to the Resource Zone thread, because that may be a quicker option.
Just an update, its been a couple of update since i requested the url update, i have not yet been approved. I am just curious, is it because the category has no editor, because it doesn't list anyone at the end of the page, does that mean that category doesn't get updated because no one is available to approve/update sites? Thanks again
No, it means that there is a large backlog of updates right now. That situation is being taken care of. Lead by a meta who used to hang out here.
As makrhod said: If you need to update a title or description, follow these guidelines: http://www.dmoz.org/guidelines/describing.html I'm seeing a lot of non-compliant update requests, and I just delete them with a note as non-compliant. This wastes a lot of our time unneccessarily, so please stop doing it. I've got about 300 more of these to go through just in the area I edit in, so I won't be reviewing any sites for the next few days.
I understand, but I only requested url change and nothing else since my previous host is shutting down soon, so there is nothing to worry about title and description Would it be possible to check the status of the update?
To guard against ODP listing hijacks, we avoid amending a listed URL when the original is still functional. However, a redirect from the old to the new adds credibility . This can either be automatic or a prominent notice on the original home page.
If a URL is changed, can the editor tell if it is the original site own who is changing it if teh email changed as well?
Just because an update is requested, doesn't mean it will be granted. As Jimnoble said, it's best to put something like "visit our new site" with a redirect to the new site, right on the main page, so we know for sure it's the owner requesting it. I just had a similar situation where a url update was requested for the second time. A prevous editor had denied the request, probably because they were unsure and the original url was still working. This time, the old url was 404, so I felt confident in granting the new url update, but yes, we have to be careful. Editors grant update requests if they comply with the Guidelines, and can be verified, if they don't (which is about 50%), they are denied. Sometimes, I deny a specific request as being non compliant, but I'll notice the description could be better, so I'll rewrite it while I'm there.
