I still haven't seen proof from fellow webmasters that a DMOZ listing (today) is really a significant source of traffic (or improved SERP ranking) for their sites when compared with optimising their site and content for the search engines.

    Just my $0.02...

Dmoz is not a waste of time. Just submit your site to dmoz which will hardly take 10-15 min and forget, Luckly if managed to get inclusion, it will worth more than anything. I do not think spending 10-15 min is much.

    thanks.

What's waste of time? Are you simpky sitting in front of your PC or Macbook and waiting for an editor to approve your site for seven months already?
It takes <10 mins to submit a site, that's the time you "waste"!
So don't simply sit and wait, go ahead, do someting! Build links, submit to directories, earn money on AdSense, get some beer, wash the dishes, feed your cat or whatever else!
Don't simply sit and wait, and there will be no time waste, my friend! :)

Seven months? It's time to move on my friend. The site has probably been deleted or something. forget about it and find some other ways to build links.

The category page that my site could be listed on has PR and while I don't lose sleep over it, I would love to see my listing there. A listing on a page like that is never a waste of time. IF (and that is a HUGE IF) you can get it.

What frustrates me is that I watch the category and recently noticed a site that is only 2 months old that has now been listed. Some of the pages I scanned on their website hardly make sense. Most of the articles could hardly be considered as authoritative under the least stringent of guidelines much less by a directory with the standards that dmoz is reputed to have in place.

How is this possible when I read about so many others on this forum that are not included? I admire the webmaster for being able to pull it off and have to admit I'm a bit envious as well as puzzled.

I've seen people offering listings for 200.00 dollars on another site. I think it was on getafreelancer.com. I would pay 50 cents. DMOZ should be nofollow links. odds are if your not a webmaster your more then likely haven't heard of DMOZ.

Just submit and move on. It takes 30 seconds. Don't worry about it thought; it's still an ok place to be but not the end all. There are other places to get good links. Try BOTW for an alternative even though it will cost you.

I think it's important to get your site listed in DMOZ.

Its just another directory jeez - sumbit your site(s) and forget all about it, eventually your submission will be reviewed, for me it took between 4-8 months - but they all got added eventually.

    Quality? LOL

    Look at this page

A PR 7 high level category with 2 listings and one goes here

That site is now a PR7 itself. A few weeks back it was pointing to an expired domain landing page. LOL.

    Quality you say?

So why not report it using the Update URL feature on every category page, or the Quality Control thread in the public forum?

That's precisely what they are for, because link checking tools are never as good as actual humans. ;)

I could have, yes, but it was a good chance to remind everyone how they can help with quality control. :)

I would think that anyone posting anyplace with editors would help with quality... but sometimes that is not the case. I complained about HUNDREDS of dead links in the same categories. I was basically told to STFU, and basically told that by several editors here on DP. For weeks, I can only assume that NONE of them checked, as they were ALL still there, and many of them had the access to make a difference.

Finally a single editor showed up and actually bothered to look. Did it truly need to be reported via the update link link?

Here is a potential problem with that link...
CNN wasn't my site. Use the report spam link? Well, heh, according to the guidelines, all those CNN links should have been entered in manually rather then automatically, so where was the abuse?

Maybe you could petition to have one or both of those links changed. In fact, it would be really cool if they would all be combined with the abuse system, that was people could check in on their updates. OH OH, you guys have a tracking system for such things....how about using it for site submissions. LOL.

I realise that I wasn't being addressed but know what? I did check out that site ( http://www.livinginternet.com/ ) when it was first mentioned here.

It's old fashioned looking and pretty ugly - but it contains a wealth of early internet history in a readily accessible form. So yes, that's certainly what I'd call a quality website :).

    It's all about content.
