DMOZ is owned by AOL and has never been owned by Google. Google use the ODP data to some extent, but that is the only connection. It's no different from any of the other downstream users of the data.
Google likely powers the aol search anyway, so there is no difference and I always thought dmoz was owned by google too, thanks for info
it's just misunderstanding guys ... AOL don't have a search engine they are using google customized search engine ... AOL is just one of biggest ISP's ... that's all , they don't have an search engine , they never had , they bough netscape it's true just because they wanted to jump on the browser's marketplace , and with netscape they got the dmoz too but ... that's all ...
Sometimes it seems they forgot they got the ODP in that deal. You can not find any reference to DMOZ on any AOL related pages, and when the directory crashed it took them months to get it all sorted out, and most of what was recovered was brought back from pulling old RDF dumps, as AOL forgot (or didn't bother) to backup their favorite lovechild...
Isn't yet clear and crystal for everyone , the dmoz it's just like a gadget for the company witch currently own it ? Only peoples who care about it it's the editors (* we know the reasons - they build the directory from '' passion '' - yeah right and pigs flying ) ... and those army of webmasters who are begging for one more back-link hopping day by day for one more raise on the serps . The company it's an ISP ... they are good at what they are doing ( * good infrastructure of cable and fiber network ) , like the editors ( * well some of them at least ) are good it's seems at listing spam urls on the directory
