Hey my site www.supportcave.com was in the DMoz for 4 months just a few days ago i noticed my google toolbar no longer showing the directory and also in firefox shows it was gone as well.. so i check the dmoz.. cant find my site http://dmoz.org/Computers/Security/Malicious_Software/Spyware_and_Adware/Detection_and_Removal_Tools/ and my site is gone and the pages PR went from a 4 to a 0 so i post to http://resource-zone.com/forum/showthread.php?p=183826#post183826 and this is what im told "It was reviewed again recently and an editor decided it should no longer be included, as the content is not unique" im not sure what i should do to get back in basically their saying my site is crap...
You could write a very polite letter pointing out that your content is indeed unique after checking around to be sure that it is and building a good case for that. DMOZ is not easily swayed from its decisions, your only hope is to catch the human editor in a good mood with a clever approach. Even if you don't move the editor the letter writing process will probably give you some new ideas on improving the site. Andi
I think you'll find the editors at RZ merely said that it wasn't the sort of site that we list. There are very many elegant and skillfully crafted websites that are in the same boat. ODP not wanting to list your website ishouldn't in any way be taken as a criticism of it -- Jim Noble Volunteer ODP meta editor
Jim, Im trying not to take it personally but for the last yr ive poured a ton of my spare time working on it, trying to make it better and more user friendly.. im still new to this, and im learning fast, but its still a slap in the face.. but im getting over my initial shock.. its just frustrating.. i waited 8 months trying to get in, then i got in and WOW im in the DMOZ.. yes im getting some where, and then im out..
I would be similarly miffed if this had happened to me. As a small consolation I've added your link here: http://www.andilinks.com/aspy.htm http://www.andilinks.com/sec.htm Andi
I've just looked at your site for the first time. IMHO it's useful and easy to use. However, the category has some 52 entries, of which 4 or 5 are included on your site. (This is ignoring the ads inserted by Google because we do.) On the other side of the coin, you feature around 3 products which should probably be in the category but aren't (yet). Would your website add value to this category (which is all we care about)? I'm afraid I don't disagree with the editors who said not. Sorry. -- Jim Noble Volunteer ODP meta editor
I'm seeing the site back in the directory this morning - (toolbar) PR5... Am I seeing things? Or did DMOZ take note?
Why attack an editor that is actually trying to help this guy?!!? He isn't defending the "machine", he is giving his opinion which was asked for. I understand all the hatred for DMOZ in general but why attack individual editors that have nothing to do with the woes. Believe it or not there are some editors that still believe in the ideals that formed DMOZ in the first place.
Indeed the site is in the Google directory but not here: http://dmoz.org/Computers/Security/...yware_and_Adware/Detection_and_Removal_Tools/ Google is still using old data and will lose it on the next update. They may do a manual modification but that's still not DMOZ which is where all the clones come from. Andi
Indeed this is quite true. Many are no longer editing DMOZ but their continued existance bodes well for the internet and humanity. Often people forget that we are working at the leading edge of civilization, this IS the information frontier. It's a neat place to get rich but it is more important that we are opening up territory to be used for generations after we're gone. Andi
Exactly and I think it hurts the campaign to reveal the real problems by attacking anyone even affiliated with DMOZ. The vast majority of editors go about their business doing what they think is right and by flaming them you are only making yourself look stupid. That aggresion would be better applied elsewhere as you may find many editors are actually on your side
That is why I have started this thread so that the good people on both sides can start communicating and find some possible solutions.
ya funny firefox says im NOT in but this morning my google toolbar shows im in http://directory.google.com/Top/Com...ftware/Spyware_and_Adware/Products_and_Tools/ and the PR is back. this is a cruel joke.. and my site is not up to the DMOZ standards which need to be better defined i must say.. And plz dont attack the DMOZ or the editors i dont want my thread hijacked by this as this type of behavior accomplishing nothing an other point if the DMOZ rejects my site whats the chance of the yahoo directory doing the same.. hate to lost $299 USD..
Yahoo! directory accepts pretty much anything as long as it looks like a real site and not a doorway or affiliate farm.
Google only updates it's directory from ODP when it feels like it and rarely shows the latest status. If you wan't to know if you're listed in ODP, look in the ODP category. If you want to know the time, don't look at a photo of a clock in last week's newspaper . jimnoble Volunteer ODP meta editor
