Yes, anyone can apply to be an editor and yes each editor determines what gets listed keeping within the editor guidelines.

Sure you *could* list your own site, if it was listable according to the guidelines, belonged to the category you edit, it was given a proper title and description, AND you treated all the other sites in the category and review pool the same.
If the site was listed by you (or anyone else for that matter) and it wasn't listable, didn't fit in that category, or was given a non-compliant title/description, it would be promptly removed from the directory by other editors though pending whatever the necessary corrections were. If you were favoring your own sites you wouldn't be an editor for long. No editor owns a category, anything we do can be undone by any other editor with the same or higher permissions.

You can approve any site from anywhere that meets the strict quidelines . Many editors use the unreviewed pool that others submit at dmoz. Editors often go searching the internet to build the directory with new sites. Some editors even see sites to add from reading newspapers or buildboards. An editor can only edit and list sites in the category(s) he/she is approved to edit in. If you edit in a category in which your own site fits in, it is usually better to review all the sites in the unreviewed pool before listing your own. :)

You usually have to start with a very small category first.
They don't let new people edit important categories until they ave proven their loyalty and (ahem) honesty.

I submitted my application to Computers > Internet > Web Design & Development > Hosting > Directories

    Wish me luck!

P.S and yes like David said, they don't just throw you into something that you're not good at unless they've seen it.

Steve, I looked at that category (both listed sites and those waiting) and it looks like it may be a bit tougher then those normally given to new editors. Directories, by design and by their nature, have a high incident of being spam magnets. Many are just copies of other directories, many are just affiliate link farms. I do not review applications, so what I am saying is just my personal opinion of this category. If this is denied (I am not saying it will be, of course), is there any thing else you may be interested in? :)

    Hey gboisseau!

Nice suprise to see you replying to this :D I am actually into the directory listings, though I was not aware of that specific area being a spam magnet or a copy of duplicates in other categories on DMOZ, however I am really aiming for the "Directories" side of DMOZ, whether it be Business related, or Computers & Internet.

In my application I gave each question a nice 3 to 4 paragraph about myself, and what I am looking to do in DMOZ, however I think that you might be right about a possible rejection because of what you stated.

If it does come down to a rejection, I hope I am able to change my selection of editing.

Thanks for replying, I really appreciate it!

I want to find quality editors. So far I have recruited 3 from DP. I know they are out there and reading this forum. Just want to give some encouragement and put a damper of the detractors.

    You are welcome! :)
