    Couldn't agree with you more.

They got over 5 million listings.

I don't think its possible to keep a list that big for free.

Should just make it paid like yahoo.

I heard dmoz was down a few days ago.

If people want "like yahoo" why not just use Yahoo? There is room in the market for more than one model. Yahoo serves webmaster marketing aims, DMOZ serves surfers. The demise of DMOZ in its current form, which is just a matter of time regardless of current outages, leaves a gap for a surfer-focussed service that specifically disregards all SEO type attempts to divert it. There is no such gap in the pay directory market aimed at web marketers.

The size is a problem for a diminishing volunteer force but instead of having to commercialise it why not dump the high cost low value spam attracting areas and focus on core values - informational sites. It is what DMOZ does very well. Less quantity more quality, and more volunteer friendly.

I've just spend a few minutes trying to close that rep message window and was just about to close my browser and restart. That wasn't nice... :D

I am curious. How many of you use dmoz for searching?
I'm asking because I am truly curious.

I have a bunch of sites listed in DMOZ but sometimes I can't find them by searching the URL.
Also I find that the results are a pain in the butt to sort through.

At any rate I hope it does come back soon. I may be losing traffic!

I use it but not exclusively. Try searching without the www, like domainname.com

Thanks for the tip but that is how I was searching.
I tried just now and it works. weird. Maybe the last time I tried there was something amiss with the server.
