DMOZ and Google weirdness

After a long overdue wait, my site finally listed on DMOZ. But the problem is that it listed for a competitor's name and the description is totally wrong (which indicated that we are from a different part of the world). It seemed like Google just pulled the info off of DMOZ and I was listed with all incorrect info in the Title and the Description. I've tried to update that with DMOZ already and will have to wait and see. Can anyone shed some lights here? Thanks!

It seems that you've already done the right thing with ODP to get any errors there corrected. Additionally, you might want to research the NOODP metatag.

You have alraedy done what can be done. Google is stupid in using things like ODp and DMOZ as sources. DMOZ is total crap and I dont think why anyone in their right mind will search there instead of directly searching Google. Given the time it takes for DMOZ to accept any submission, and who knows whether the volunteers are letting in sites for payment, I wonder why anyone is even considering the existence of DMOZ anymore.

DMOZ is not a listing service for webmasters, and volunteer editors build the directory by finding sites in all sorts of places.
The suggestions made by other people are nothing more than one resource editors can use if and when they want to. That is why there is no time frame or review guarantee given in relation to any site suggestion.

Umm, DMOZ and ODP are actually the same "thing". :)

    Hi,

Me and my boss were about to begin to work to put his website on DMOZ.
Regarding what I've read in this thread, should we?

NOODP metatag << Learn something new everyday. Thanks!

I felt really upset because the stupid ODP tags replaced all my regular meta tag. The funny thing is that the info was from a competing site (which had already died long time ago). And somehow the ODP editor didn't even bother to take a look and just accepting or replacing my link with the competing site and keep other the competing site tags.

Politely request to the editor to change the title and description of your website using form to update your listing. Till then use noodp meta so that google will show your own title and description in the search not from the dmoz listing.

I am not sure what exactly you mean by "work". If that is submitting your site to DMOZ, then I can't see any reason why you shouldn't. But I would strongly recommend that you remember that it can by no means be your only priority. It's just one of the options after all.
