This is an interesting article on the subject.

    http://www.seoresearcher.com/distribution-of-clicks-on-googles-serps-and-eye-tracking-analysis.htm

Another article I was reading suggested this.

    1 42.3%
    2 11.9%
    3 8.5%
    4 6.0%
    5 4.9%
    6 4.0%
    7 3.4%
    8 3.0%
    9 3.0%
    10 2.8%

Obvioiusly there is no doubting that the first serp get's the majortiy of the traffic. IMO it's close to 45% but it's probably different for each industry. I always try and aim for a top 3 spot.

What is your personal experience? When you think about this it makes you wonder how much traffic you are potentially missing out on.

AOL released some data by accident in 2006....Boykinds wrote about it a while ago...http://www.webuildpages.com/jim/click-rate-for-top-10-search-results/

I don't think these numbers are exactly right...because I have watched my sites rise from the bottom to top and while they do get an increase, it isn't super dramatic...3rd to 1st isnt breaking the bank....I have niche sites, so maybe on really compeitive stuff like cars and shit like that...maybe....but from what I have seen- not as dramatic as it looks on paper

#10 gets more than that - especially with a decent title and snippet. Worst spots are about 6-8. #11 may well get more traffic than #8.

Think about user behavior. If it is below the fold it is not getting looked at - except #10 which is just before the next page links.

Good title and descriptions will definitely help click through rates, but I doubt the click % is way off the mark. The data shows #3 getting about three times more clicks then #10. Sounds about right. I'm never clicking on the last serp on the first page and rarely check out the second page.

Thanks, it seems the numbers I posted in this thread is based on the AOL leaked data.

I think it's about right, for the top 10, but the issues is that, sometimes, adsense ads, images, news, videos, and other items are above the SERP results. So you might think that you moved from #3 to #1, which is suppose to be 8% to 42%, a 4 times increase, when reality, all you did was moving from #6 to #4, with 3 adsense ads on top soaking up the big click amount. And you should also check SERP in other countries, you might be moving to #1 in USA, but you might still be lagging in other countries so the increase isn't that drastic.
