distributing articles on my site

I have a bunch of unique articles on my site. I want to submit them to various article sites like www.articledepot.co.uk

Since they have been on my site and indexed, do have to worry about duplicate content filters?

I'd say yes. There's a (big?) possibility of hitting a duplicate filter. Do you want to take the chance?

My experience has been that you will not have any issues. One thing you can do is make sure your surrounding HTML is unique enough to bring the percentage of duplicate content down.

If you are worried about it though, it may be better to write articles that are specifically for distribution. These can be similar in subject to your existing content but just different enough to make it a non issue.

Now what exactly do you mean surrounding?

I believe he means the HTML that makes up your actual page and surrounds the article.

Your title, your navigation, your background, any images, etc. All this should be different enough from any other page to avoid the duplicate content filter.

There is no proven percentage for "enough". That may be why some people write articles for their site AND for distribution. By seperating them there is no risk there.

In the end, if it is traffic you are trying to drive, having your article dominate the SERPs (even if it drops you a place or two) can only be a good thing. It basically creates a big funnel in the SERPs delivering qualified traffic for free.

I think even with the most basic amount of navigation, you will avoid the page being dropped all together. Also remember that the "Duplicate Content" penalty is enforced on a page by page basis. So the rest of your site will see no loss of rankings even if you have this issue. Only the page involved will be affected.

That's a new angle on the old CSS/Tableless layouts argument (code to content ratio). Never thought of it as reducing wiggle space :)

    Cheers,

I went ahead with one of the articles, I'm pretty confident nothing will happen, but i'll give a few days and see what happens before i go ahead with more articles.

Intersted to see how it works out.. I have a few articles I have written for one of my sites, but they are not really generating a natural interest so they might be more effective if I distribute them...

Still a bit hesitant on the whole article sharing thing.... But that is a personal problem between me and my writing. :)
