I have just bought a baby shared hosting account from hostgator and they seemed very good until i stumbled into 1 really strange problem. When I try to create a MySQL database I always have username_dbNAME.I can`t change this! I can`t believe hostgator.com can`t provide custom database names,it`s quite strange. Also in the PHP MyAdmin I can`t add databases,it sais i don`t have enough privilegs. Has someone else had this problem?is there anything I can do?
Contact them about it.... Ive got exactly the same hosting account and ive never had any problems with databases. They usually reply in pretty snappy time!
I ues tham and are very happy with them. I dont see whats wrong with having "username_dbNAME" as a database name. ??? - Sam
I don't use Host Gator but this seems like a pretty insignificant complaint about a shared hosting account if you ask me.
about the creation of the database, does your account allow you to create the database? or have you already consume all the database? In this case, simply contact them
The username_database name is actually part and parcel of the Cpanel setup. I am not sure if you could actually get around it as Cpanel uses it to prevent any clash in database names amongst all the virtual hosts sites hosted on the same server. It is really a neat security feature.
i talked to 2 representatives, all of them told me I can't change the database names as I wish.Yes maybe it's not such a big deal, but don't you find annoying that you can't have flexibility?I mean let's be honest,i don`t understand why they can't accept a complete custom database name. chrissatchwell : Were your database names like "username_databaseNAME" ?
Like I said, this is the feature of Cpanel which prevents similiar name database from clashing each other between customers. Cpanel tagging your username would prevent that from happening. The thing is that not everyone writes their own scripts and most people would just install written scripts. Imagine if a several hundred people install the same script with the same default database name. It will create a big chaos. Cpanel is mindful of that and thus tag your username to the database name to prevent such issues from happening. You cannot blame hostgator for that. If you want your own custom database name, get your own dedicated server.
That shouldnt be a problem, unless you have some sort of major typing disorder that wont let you type the letters in your username. My hosting does the same thing, I think its because its on a shared server.
I do not think any host would have done this for you .. Remember you have bought a $10 package not a $200 one.
