I've noticed a lot of sites have started doing automatic searches for people that are in your gmail address book to let you quickly send them invites to sign up. ( tagged.com, stumbleupon.com ... )

Does anybody know how this is possible? I was a bit shocked that my contact lists was accessible but I can see massive potential for marketing my own sites if I did the same thing.

Yeah, i've searched around for an API that i can use but haven't found anything. There must be something out there unless these larger sites have some kind of an arrangment with google etc, which i doubt

There are tons of them out there. Just search for gmail in the package repository of your favorite language. For example, there's libgmail for python.
