Display vs Search

In the past I have always gone for search PCP. I like how I can target to specific keywords and have 100% control over my campaign.
Recently I tried display ads. I tried banners and text and it was a disaster.
10,000+ impressions 30 clicks NOT ONE CONVERSION!
I now have this blockage in my head for displays Ads. I just feel its webmasters clicking on ads to get AdSence earnings.
I think a lot of them are fake clicks 50%+
Does anyone use Display and actually convert?
Any tips? Am I doing it all wrong?
I want to target users looking for web design quotes/websites. Therefore any website really that has users that might want a website really.

My experience is different. I got most of conversion from Display Ad. Here one thing is important that where you want to show your Ad (I am talking about Manage Placement), Area, Language etc. And my strategy is I use no of Ad copies. For banner Ad also I use multiple Ad copies. I will suggest you download report of your PPC campaign, examine it and remove non performing keywords, the Ad copies which have low Quality score and CTR. Optimize your campaign again.

Generally, on display ads we got lots of impression and has low ctr. Also, cpc were less than search. I will suggest you to add more targeting option and themed keywords.
Work on your ads so that it convery accurate message about your services and yes there are very few chance that someone click on your ads just to earn from adsense as Google will find it soon and suspend their account.

Display wont work in many places so better you include the managed placement with right set of websites so that it may help you out. Basically if your going to banner ads place in the websites that you feel which get better conversion rate. directly contact them no as PPC

In my experience on the Google Adwords Support Team I spoke to almost 7500 AdWords advertisers. As a general rule the display network does convert a lot less for most businesses but the cost per click usually is less as well. In order to convert you should make use of the placement tool to use more managed placements as was suggested earlier in the thread. You should also use Google Analytics and link it to your AdWords. This will allow you to determine the activity of visitors who come from the display network. The display network works best for branding campaigns and for those goods and services that are not as well known and potential customers are not aware of them so do not know to search. The display network can be very powerful if used correctly.

If those ads are targeted for the conversions you`d better choose Search Network only. Display network is good to promote your business and branding.

Here's my display campaign strategy that has worked fantastic over the past year.

    1. Start out by duplicating your search campaigns into a display campaign
    2. Create separate campaigns for Banners and Text Ads (they perform different)
    3. Every keyword that gets a lot of clicks separate into a new adgroup
    4. Exclude websites that don't get you conversions (allow at least 30-50 clicks for each website)
    5. Exclude specific URL's from websites that have low conversion rate
    6. Repeat steps 3-5 until you become profitable.
    Good luck.
